Mexico's vigilantes attack local police, take arms

Vigilantes attack a local police officer during clashes between local police and self defense groups in the town of Tixtla, Mexico, Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. The vigilantes beat several police with rifle butts and machetes and handcuffed them, then stole their rifles and briefly kidnapped some municipal officials, authorities said. The clash highlighted the confusion and contradictions in the Mexican government's effort to deal with "self-defense groups" that have sprung up in parts of southern Mexico since February to fight drug cartels.
