I adore Alaska and would retire there in a second, but most people whine about the cold.

I have traveled this country looking for a good place to retire. Georgia ranks number one for me so far. It's ahead of all the places mentioned in this clueless yahoo infomercial. I wonder how much they paid yahoo to get this on their site.

Georgia is one of the best states to retire but there are better and cheaper places if you are willing to live outside the USA. I have lived in Panama for the past 12 years but if I was to return to the USA I would pick Georgia.

We all get to pay for the Alaska dividend through the oil severance taxes that Sarah Palin put in effect. She bragged about how she cut their taxes and forgot to mention how she raised ours.

Property tax and toll bridges are the dumbest ideas for taxes our government has ever even contemplated. Get rid of both of them everywhere.

They should enforce current laws on the books, like littering for example. Have a minimum fine of $1,000 for each offense. Let all of those traffic cams catch the pigs who throw their garbage out the window. Ticketing the litter bugs would help the governments get money and would be good for the environment.

You forgot to mention that seniors in Pa lose their homes every day because they can't afford the property tax. Not so friendly.

But you didn't mention the cost of living, well above the national average, which takes all you save in taxes plus a lot more.

California is a great state... no matter what you do you'll pay the highest possible tax rate. Moonbeam and the silly people of California who follow every word he utters will gladly take every last dime. It's a shame. Used to be a really great state... not it is horrible and getting worse.

Dido, I was going to stay but I think I have to go way from the state I was born and raised in I have mad a big investment into the IQD over five Mill. I'm not greedy but 38% on capital gains. I think its time to think about a Nev. corp.

      Tax-friendly approach?

Why don't we take a couple living in each of these states with average, mid range and high SS numbers and then find the COSTs to live with all the taxes they would pay on a median priced home, food, auto fees, health care, auto insurances and all the real life things people pay for during a year. Make sure to add in heating costs, average electrical costs including air conditioning for those areas that require it.

I have done such an exercize and my number, compared to a new England state with heating bills and property taxes, no income taxes and low sales taxes amounted to $1,200.00 +- more.

So, for $100.00 a month would I move to that "low tax state"? Heck, I couldn't ever recover the Sales cost of my home or the moving costs. The heating costs and property tax differences alone amounts to 120K over a 20 year retirement period!

The tax friendly approach for any retiree that has not done a similar exercize could be a traumatic shock when they arrive in thier new locations. The grass is not always greener in the "tax friendly state".

Now that is a oxymoron there is no such thing as a tax friendly anything let alone a state.

Get out of country altogether, Obama will soon be instituting tax slavery with his tax increases planned to fund his Entitlement Nation. Tax freedom day is getting closer to December every year. More confiscation ahead.
