At The Top, Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Photo: Tom Olliver/Flickr - An architectural marvel, it houses a number of things including the 160-room Armani Hotel Dubai and its accompanying 144 private residences. But the view from At the Top, the building’s observation deck is undoubtedly the USP.

Photo: Carron Brown/Flickr - The newly opened The Shard is Western Europe’s tallest building at 1,016ft and the sensory experience known as The View from The Shard is located on levels 68, 69 and 72. The 360-degree view of London from 800ft up is nothing short of magical. Familiar landmarks like Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral seem to lie practically at your feet while the Oval Cricket Ground can be discerned at a distance.

Aurland Lookout. Photo: Bernt Rostad/Flickr - A three-hour drive from Bergen, Aurland is a small town that’s home to a very big architectural work of art. At a height of over 2,000ft with majestic views over the fjords, Aurland Lookout was designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen. A massive wooden bridge, it curves seamlessly downward to perpendicularly meet the mountainside. At first glance, the structure is terrifying as there seems to be nothing to stop you from falling over the edge.

Enclosed viewing platform at The Sphinx Observatory, Switzerland - An astronomical observatory, The Sphinx observatory sits atop Jungfraujoch in Switzerland at a height of 11,716ft. A train ride brings you to the railway station at the base and after an elevator ride through the tunnelled-out inside of the mountain, you will find yourself inside the observatory. There is an outdoor observation deck as well as an enclosed viewing platform. Views here include those of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch

The Grand Canyon Skywalk. Photo: John Wood - The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped cantilevered bridge with a glass base that juts out over the canyon in the Grand Canyon West area. Located at a height of 4,770ft, the views are spellbinding and the canyon’s famous blazing sunrises and sunsets take on an entirely different character here. Note that personal belongings such as cameras are not permitted on to the Skywalk.

There are numerous falls and walkways that you can see but you cannot leave without seeing the Devil’s Throat, the point where the falls are at their highest and deepest.

Sky100, Hong Kong. Photo: Barbara Willi/Flickr - Located on the 100th floor of Hong Kong’s International Commerce Centre, Sky100 is the city’s highest observation deck. It boasts 360-degree views out over the harbour, interactive displays and booths and 3D projection devices.
