Air China plans up to $842 million share placement to buy planes, boost capital

Air China plans to raise up to 6.0 billion yuan ($842 million) in a private share sale on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to expand its fleet and replenish working capital, it said on Friday. The flagship carrier is aiming to sell up to 854.7 million shares, equivalent to 30% of its existing capital, to its controlling shareholder China National Aviation Holding Corporation Limited, it said in a statement to the Shanghai exchange. Air China will use 4.2 billion yuan of the proceeds to fund the purchase of 17 airplanes, with the remaining 1.8 billion yuan used to boost its working capital, according to the filing.

China's top airlines report quarterly profit after years of losses

BEIJING (Reuters) -China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines each reported first quarterly profits in more than three years on Friday, as a pickup in international flights complemented a recovery in the domestic market. The results, coupled with similarly encouraging figures from Air China, are helping to fan industry hopes for China's big three state carriers to finally step out of the difficulties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. China Southern, based in the southern city of Guangzhou, reported third-quarter profit of 4.2 billion yuan ($573.89 million), compared with a loss of 1.0 billion yuan in the prior quarter, and a loss of 6.1 billion in the year-earlier quarter.

UPDATE 1-Cathay Pacific buys 32 Airbus A321-200neo aircraft for $4.66 bln

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways said on Friday it had purchased 32 Airbus A321-200neo aircraft from Airbus for a basic price of $4.66 billion. The deal follows an agreement between an Airbus unit and the aircraft acquisition facilitators of Hong Kong's flagship carrier in September 2017. Cathay expects the aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2029, and expand the fleet capacity of Hong Kong Express, one of its units.

Air China jet evacuated after engine fire sends smoke into cabin in Singapore and 9 are injured

Nine passengers were injured after an engine fire sent smoke into the cabin of an Air China jetliner landing in Singapore, prompting an evacuation of the aircraft. The Airbus A320 with 146 passengers and nine crew made an emergency landing about 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Changi Airport said in a statement on its Facebook page. The flight was coming from the city of Chengdu in China's Sichuan province.

UPDATE 1-Air Koryo to fly between Pyongyang-Beijing thrice a week -China regulator

China's civil aviation authority has granted Air Koryo approval to fly between Pyongyang and Beijing on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from March 26 to Oct. 28, the authority said on Wednesday in a response to Reuters queries. Chinese state carrier Air China, which also used to fly between the two cities, has not applied to resume flying China-North Korea routes, it said. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were usually about 3-5 Air Koryo flights between Beijing and Pyongyang a week, depending on season and demand, as well as flights to Shanghai and Shenyang, said Simon Cockerell, general manager at Beijing-based Koryo Tours.

China's top airlines' losses narrow after lifting of COVID curbs

China's three largest airlines reported narrower losses in the first quarter, with domestic and international travel picking up after the country dropped its strict COVID restrictions at the end of last year and reopened its borders. Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd, China's no. 3 carrier by revenue, cut its first quarter loss to 3.8 billion yuan ($549.3 million) from 9.3 billion yuan in the last three months of 2022. China Southern Airlines Co Ltd, which posted a staggering 15.1 billion yuan loss in the last quarter of 2022, reported a 1.9 billion yuan net loss, while flagship carrier Air China Ltd cut its quarterly loss to 2.9 billion yuan from 10.5 billion yuan.
