Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday he has not decided whether to bring forward the name of the next central bank chief or announce it closer to the end of the year, when central bank governor Roberto Campos Neto's term ends. Talking to journalists in Brasilia, Lula again questioned Campos Neto's performance and called for lower interest rates. Lula said, however, he has "no problem" with Campos Neto staying in the role until his term ends in December.

The board of directors of Brazilian state-run oil company Petrobras is scheduled to meet on Friday, but a much-awaited discussion on extra dividends will not be on the agenda, four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. Market participants have been eagerly awaiting a decision on whether the oil giant will pay out the extraordinary dividends relative to its 2023 results or not, but the final word will likely come next week when shareholders gather for a general assembly, the sources said. Petrobras' board in March voted to set aside 43.9 billion reais ($8.39 billion) to pay out in extra dividends in the future, with Brazil's government - which controls the company and its board - hoping it would be able to reinvest that cash.

Brazil judge suspends Petrobras chair over conflict of interest

BRASILIA (Reuters) -A Brazilian judge has suspended the chair of state oil firm Petrobras' board, Pietro Sampaio Mendes, over a conflict of interest regarding his role in the Ministry of Energy, a court decision seen by Reuters on Thursday showed. The ruling by Sao Paulo Judge Paulo Cezar Neves Junior also ordered wage and salary payments to Mendes be halted. Besides conflict of interest, the ruling also cited other alleged non-compliance issues, including the lack of use of a recruitment agent when Mendes was appointed to the role.
