Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said on Wednesday that a new chip manufacturing technology called "A16" will enter production in the second half of 2026, setting up a showdown with longtime rival Intel over who can make the world's fastest chips. TSMC, the world's biggest contract manufacturer of advanced computing chips and a key supplier to Nvidia and Apple , announced the news at a conference in Santa Clara, California, where TSMC executives said that makers of AI chips will likely be the first adopters of the technology rather than a smartphone maker.

TSMC, the world's biggest contract manufacturer of advanced computing chips and a key supplier to Nvidia and Apple, announced the news at a conference in Santa Clara, California, where TSMC executives said that makers of AI chips will likely be the first adopters of the technology rather than a smartphone maker. Analysts told Reuters that the technologies announced on Wednesday could call into question Intel's claims in February that it will overtake TSMC in making the world's fastest computing chips with a new technology Intel calls "14A."

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said on Wednesday that a new chip manufacturing technology called "A16" will enter production in the second half of 2026. At a conference in Santa Clara, California, TSMC's co-Chief Operating Officer Y.J. Mii said the technology will also allow for the delivery of power to computing chips from the backside of the chip, which helps speed up artificial intelligence chips and is an area where TSMC has been competing with U.S. rival Intel. TSMC is the world's biggest contract manufacturer of chips for firms such as Nvidia and currently makes the worlds fastest chips.

UPDATE 5-Taiwan rattled by more than 200 quakes, but no major damage

Taiwan's quake-hit eastern county of Hualien was rattled by more than 200 aftershocks late on Monday and early on Tuesday, but only minor damage was reported and no casualties and major chipmaker TSMC said it saw no impact on operations. Largely rural and sparsely populated Hualien was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3 that killed at least 17 people, and there have been more than 1,000 aftershocks since.
