UBS gets backing for capital plan, Ermotti pay from Norway wealth fund

LONDON (Reuters) -Norway's sovereign wealth fund has backed UBS' plan to make its Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds, a form of debt, more appealing to investors by protecting them from a wipeout, and also signed off on UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti's pay package. The vote from the Norwegian fund, UBS' second-largest shareholder, at the bank's annual general meeting this week is a boost for UBS, which is seeking to prop up its capital buffers to satisfy Swiss regulators' demands as it integrates its former rival Credit Suisse. The bonds can be converted into equity or written off.

Five waves of UBS layoffs to start in June, SonntagsZeitung says

VIENNA (Reuters) -Layoffs under Swiss banking giant UBS's cost-cutting programme announced after its takeover of Credit Suisse will take place in five waves this year starting in June, newspaper SonntagsZeitung reported on Sunday. "In total, 50-to-60% of ex-CS (Credit Suisse staff) will probably be laid off over the five rounds," SonntagsZeitung quoted a source it described as an insider as saying. After the first round in June, in which 25-30% of former Credit Suisse staff are expected to be made redundant, the next rounds will take place in August, September, October and November, the newspaper reported, putting the planned savings at 12 billion Swiss francs ($13.2 billion).

UBS added capital needs of $15-25 billion are realistic, Swiss minister says

Estimates that Swiss bank UBS will require another $15 billion to $25 billion in capital under government proposals aimed at making the banking sector more robust are about right, Switzerland's finance minister was quoted as saying on Tuesday. "That's right, those orders of magnitude are plausible," Swiss Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter told the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper. Keller-Sutter was speaking after the Swiss government last week set out proposals to tighten regulation for banks deemed "too big to fail", particularly UBS, which said the lender would face more stringent capital requirements in future.

UBS could need $10 billion-$15 billion in extra capital to meet new Swiss rules, analyst says

UBS might need to retain $10 billion to $15 billion in excess capital after Switzerland's government this week laid out plans for tougher capital requirements for the enlarged lender, Autonomous Research estimated on Thursday. In its base case, UBS would need 200 to 300 basis points more in common equity tier 1 ratio (CET1 ratio), a measure of a bank's resilience, which "would require the retention of around $10-15 billion incremental CET1 capital in coming years," banks analyst Stefan Stalmann wrote in a note to clients. In a worse case "headwind", UBS would face up to 700 basis points more for its CET1 ratio, Stalmann said, although he cautioned that his estimates were based in part on guesswork because the Swiss government had not quantified the extra capital it believed the enlarged UBS would need to hold.
