| Bar Harbor Bankshares operates as the holding company for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust that provides commercial and retail banking services to individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and municipalities in Hancock, Washington, and Knox counties, Maine. Its deposit products include checking accounts, interest bearing NOW accounts, money market accounts, savings accounts, club accounts, short-term and long-term certificates of deposit, health savings accounts, and individual retirement accounts, as well as commercial deposit accounts, such as business checking and tiered money market accounts. The companys loan portfolio comprises consumer loans, including home mortgages, residential construction loans, home equity loans and lines of credit, credit cards, installment loans, and overdraft protection services, as well as secured and unsecured installment loans for new or used automobiles, boats, recreational vehicles, mobile homes, and other personal needs; and business loans for capital construction, real estate and equipment financing, working capital, real estate development, and a range of other business purposes. Bar Harbor Bankshares also offers safe deposit box rental, wire transfers, check collection services, foreign currency exchange, money orders, and U.S. Savings Bonds; life insurance, annuity, and retirement products; and debit cards, automated teller machines, and Internet banking services. In addition, its services include cash management, merchant credit card processing, night depository, and coin and currency handling services; and trust, financial planning, investment management, and third-party brokerage services. As of December 31, 2008, Bar Harbor Bankshares operated 12 branch offices. The company was founded in 1884 and is based in Bar Harbor, Maine. |
