| Garmin Ltd. and its subsidiaries design, develop, manufacture, and market global positioning system (GPS)-enabled products and other navigation, communication, and information products worldwide. It operates in four segments: Automotive/Mobile, Outdoor/Fitness, Marine, and Aviation. The Automotive/Mobile segment offers a range of automotive navigation products, as well as various products and applications designed for the mobile GPS market. The Outdoor/Fitness segment provides GPS-enabled handheld products for outdoor activities, cyclists, and training assistants for athletic pursuits. The Marine segment offers network products and multifunction displays, fixed-mount GPS/chartplotter products, instruments, radars, autopilots, and sounder products. The Aviation segment provides panel-mounted product line, which includes GPS-enabled navigation, VHF communications transmitters/receivers, multi function displays, receivers, instrument landing system receivers, marker beacon receivers, and audio panels, as well as digital transponders that transmit an aircrafts altitude and its flight identification number in response to requests transmitted by ground-based air traffic control radar systems or collision avoidance devices on other aircraft. Garmins non-aviation products and consumer products are sold through independent dealers and distributors, and panel-mount aviation products are sold through aviation distributors worldwide. It has a strategic alliance with ASUSTeK Computer Inc. to design, manufacture, and distribute co-branded location-centric mobile phones. The company was founded in 1990 and is based in Camana Bay, Cayman Islands with additional offices in Olathe, Kansas; Southampton, the United Kingdom; and Shijr, Taiwan. |
