| Allegheny Energy, Inc. owns and operates electric generation facilities, and delivers electric services to customers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. The company operates in two segments, Delivery and Services and Generation and Marketing. The Delivery and Services segment conducts electric transmission and distribution businesses that serve approximately 381,000 customers in northern West Virginia; 480,000 customers in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia; and 713,000 customers in southwestern, south-central, and northern Pennsylvania. The Generation and Marketing segment owns, operates, and manages electric generation facilities. This segment generates electricity through various fuel sources, including coal and synthetic fuels, natural gas-fired, pumped-storage and hydro, and steam. As of December 31, 2008, it owned or controlled approximately 6,919; 2,811; and 1,084 megawatts of generation capacity. This segment also purchases and sells energy and energy-related commodities. The company is headquartered in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. |
