| Prior to May 2003, National Steel Corporation operated as an integrated steel producer in the United States and engaged in the manufacture and sale of various flat rolled carbon steel products, including hot-rolled; cold-rolled; galvanized; tin; and chrome plated steels. The companys flat rolled carbon steel was sold primarily to the automotive, construction, pipe and tube, service centers, and container markets. The company was founded in 1929 and is based in Mishawaka, Indiana. In May 2003, the company completed the sale of substantially all of its principal steelmaking and finishing assets, and iron ore pellet operations to United States Steel Corporation for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $1.05 billion. On March 6, 2002, National Steel Corporation filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Chicago. The plan was later approved as liquidation plan on October 23, 2003. |
