BUSINESS SUMMARY 
Northeast Utilities, a public utility holding company, engages in the energy delivery business for residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts. It operates in three segments: Electric Distribution, Natural Gas Distribution, and Electric Transmission. The Electric Distribution segment engages in the purchase, delivery, and sale of electricity. As of December 31, 2008, it furnished retail franchise electric service to approximately 1.2 million customers in 149 cities and towns in Connecticut; 493,000 retail customers in 211 cities and towns in New Hampshire; and 206,000 retail customers in 59 cities and towns in western Massachusetts. This segment also owns and operates approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity generation facilities. The Natural Gas Distribution segment operates a natural gas distribution system in Connecticut and provides gas supply to residential customers for heating, hot water, and cooking needs, as well as to commercial and industrial customers. It also offers gas transportation services to commercial and industrial customers. This segment serves approximately 200,000 customers. The Electric Transmission segment enables utilities, generation owners, and marketers to plan and operate generation and transmission facilities, as well as provides transmission services. The company was founded in 1927 and is headquartered in Berlin, Connecticut.
