| Rural/Metro Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, provides medical ambulance response services in the United States. The company offers two levels of ambulance services, Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS). The ALS ambulances are staffed with one or two paramedics and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) equipped with cardiac monitors/defibrillators, airway management equipment, and oxygen delivery systems, as well as pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. The BLS ambulances are staffed with two EMTs and equipped with medical supplies and equipment necessary to administer first aid and basic medical treatment. The company also provides various other ambulance services, such as emergency response services to counties, municipalities, fire districts, and other governmental agencies; non-emergency response services and critical care transfers for healthcare facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, and other specialty care providers, as well as at the request of a patient; and wheelchair transports and event standby services. In addition, it offers critical care transfer services to medically unstable patients, such as cardiac patients and neonatal patients using ambulances equipped with additional medical equipment and/or staffed by a medical specialist, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, neonatal nurse specialists, and specially trained paramedics. Further, Rural/Metro Corporation provides fire protection and related services to residential and commercial property owners, as well as to industrial sites, airports, and other self-contained facilities. Additionally, the company offers home health care and protection services. As of June 30, 2009, it operated approximately 1,773 vehicles comprising 1,164 ambulances, 111 wheelchair vans, 163 fire apparatus, and 335 support vehicles providing medical services to approximately 400 communities in 23 states.
