| Santander BanCorp operates as the holding for Banco Santander Puerto Rico that provides various financial products and services in Puerto Rico. It operates in five segments: Commercial Banking, Mortgage Banking, Consumer Finance, Treasury and Investments, and Wealth Management. The Commercial Banking segment provides financial products and services to individual clients, and small-and medium-sized businesses in Puerto Rico; and specialized services, construction lending, international commerce, cash management, bank card products, letters of credit, and other foreign trade-related services to public sector, not-for-profit organizations, universities, and healthcare and financial institutions. The Mortgage Banking segment originates, sells, and services various residential mortgage loans. The Consumer Finance segment provides consumer loans and real estate-secured loans. The Treasury and Investments segment handles investment portfolio and liquidity position, as well as offers financial services to clients in the form of derivative instruments. The Wealth Management segment offers various products and services that include asset management and other trust services. In addition, the company engages in securities brokerage and investment banking, and insurance operations. As of December 31, 2008, it operated 57 banking branches and 169 automated teller machines.
