| SCANA Corporation engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity to retail and wholesale customers in South Carolina. The company also purchases, sells, and transports natural gas to retail customers in South Carolina and southeastern Georgia; provides energy-related risk management services; and acquires, owns, and provides financing for nuclear fuel, fossil fuel, and emission allowances. In addition, it offers fiber optic communications, Ethernet services, and data center facilities, as well as builds, manages, and leases communications towers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia; and services contracts on home appliances, and heating and air conditioning units. Further, SCANA Corporation holds an investment in a company, which owns and operates a cogeneration facility in Charleston, South Carolina; and provides tower site construction, management, and rental services in South Carolina and North Carolina. As of December 31, 2008, the company provided electricity to approximately 649,600 customers; and natural gas to approximately 775,000 customers. It also marketed natural gas to approximately 460,000 retail customers. Additionally, SCANA Corporation owned and operated a 500 mile fiber optic telecommunications network and Ethernet network, and data center facilities in South Carolina; and through joint venture held interest in an additional 2,280 miles of fiber in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. The company was founded in 1924 and is based in Cayce, South Carolina. |
