| UniSource Energy Corporation, through its subsidiaries, operates as an electric utility in Arizona. It operates through three segments: TEP, UNS Gas, and UNS Electric. The TEP segment provides regulated electric service to approximately 400,000 retail customers in Southeastern Arizona. It also holds a franchise to provide electric distribution service to customers in the Cities of Tucson and South Tucson, as well as sells electricity to other utilities and power marketing entities in the western United States. This segment provides its services to residential, commercial, industrial, and public sector customers; and serves copper mining, cement manufacturing, defense, health care, and education industries, as well as military bases and other governmental entities. As of December 31, 2008, it owned or participated in an overhead electric transmission and distribution system, including 512 circuit-miles of 500-kV lines; 1,098 circuit-miles of 345-kV lines; 366 circuit-miles of 138-kV lines; 475 circuit-miles of 46-kV lines; and 2,625 circuit-miles of lower voltage primary lines. The UNS Gas segment distributes gas to approximately 146,000 retail customers in Mohave, Yavapai, Coconino, and Navajo counties in northern Arizona, as well as in Santa Cruz County in southeast Arizona. As of December 31, 2008, its transmission and distribution system consisted of approximately 58 miles of steel transmission mains, 4,253 miles of steel and plastic distribution mains, and 135,220 customer service lines. The UNS Electric segment engages in electric transmission and distribution for approximately 90,000 retail customers in Mohave and Santa Cruz Counties. As of December 31, 2008, its transmission and distribution system consisted of approximately 56 circuit-miles of 115-kV transmission lines, 264 circuit-miles of 69-kV transmission lines, and 3,548 circuit-miles of underground and overhead distribution lines.
