BUSINESS SUMMARY 
Varian, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, designs, develops, manufactures, markets, sells, and services scientific instruments and vacuum products. The company operates in two segments, Scientific Instruments and Vacuum Technologies. The Scientific Instruments segment offers analytical instruments, such as mass spectrometers, chromatography instruments, optical spectroscopy instruments, and dissolution testing equipment; research products, which include nuclear magnetic resonance products, spectroscopy systems, magnetic resonance imaging systems, X-ray crystallography systems, and superconducting magnets used in scientific instruments; consumable products, including columns for gas and liquid chromatography, and products for the preparation of samples prior to analysis by gas and liquid chromatography; and related software, accessories and services. These products are used in life science, environmental, energy, applied research, and other applications requiring identification, quantification, and analysis of the elemental, molecular, biological composition, or structure of liquids, solids, or gases. The Vacuum Technologies segment provides high and ultra-high vacuum pumps, such as diffusion, turbomolecular, and ion getter; intermediate vacuum pumps consisting of rotary vane, sorption, and dry scroll; vacuum instrumentation, which include vacuum control instruments, sensor gauges, and meters; and vacuum components comprising valves, flanges, and other mechanical hardware. These products are used to create, control, measure, and test vacuum environments in life science, environmental, energy, research, and other applications. This segment also offers helium mass spectrometry and helium-sensing leak detection instruments used to identify and measure leaks in hermetic or vacuum environments. The company sells its products and services in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Varian, Inc. was founded in 1999 and is based in Palo Alto, California.
