Taiwan's PC hardware manufacturer Acer (2353.Taiwan) tumbled 3.8% after saying it would write down most of its cloud services assets it bought in 2011 for $320 million. To lessen the blow to shareholders, Acer said it would buy back up to 100 million shares at an estimated purchase price ranging from NT$10 to NT$19 per share, "in case of abnormal stock price fluctuations." Acer was trading at NT$12.85 this morning. Acer sits on enough cash, with about NT$36.6 billion on its balance sheet as of the end of September.

Acer Inc (2353.TW) founder Stan Shih said he would welcome a takeover of the struggling Taiwanese computer maker after a steep fall in its share price, while warning any potential buyer would pay a heavy price. "Welcome," Shih told reporters in response to a question about whether Acer would be open to a takeover. Acer has reported steep on-year sales falls in recent months, including a 33 percent drop in July.
