Can Chinese Airline Stocks Soar Higher in 2017?

Shares of China’s three main carriers have outperformed the Hang Seng Index this year despite concerns over potential falls in the value of the Chinese yuan. The Hong Kong-listed H-shares of Air China (753.HK), China Southern Airlines (1055.HK) and China Eastern Airlines (670.HK) have on average risen 13% since the beginning of the year versus a 4% by the HSI. UOB Kay Hian analyst K Ajith notes the outperformance could due to “anticipation of strong full-year results following China Southern’s guidance for a record profit.” The analyst expects the strong run to continue in 2017: For 2017, we expect yields to improve as fuel prices rise, given their high historical correlation.
