South Africa Debt: Downgrade From Investment Grade Soon?

With its outlook weighed down by low commodity prices, budgetary constraints, corruption allegations, a local election and Brexit, South Africa debt is likely to lose its investment grade rating status later this year, Societe Generale says in a fresh report. The iShares MSCI South Africa exchange-traded fund (EZA) was up 0.6% in recent trading, in line with the performance of the iShares MSCI Emerging markets ETF (EEM). The South Africa fund is up nearly 10% this year, while the emerging market ETF is up about 6% and the VanEck Vectors Africa Index ETF (AFK) is up more than 12%.

Nigeria Currency Devaluation: ETF Craters 22% & Fitch Warns Investors

Nigeria currency devaluation Monday won't be followed by greater foreign direct investment if the process doesn't clear a backlog of unmet dollar demand, Fitch Ratings warns. Nigeria said this week it will introduce a market-driven currency system, and will abandon a policy that restricted access and hampered its financing efforts and the economy. After the announcement, the Global X MSCI Nigeria exchange-traded fund (NGE) got slammed this week, down 22%, while the VanEck Vectors Africa Index ETF (AFK) fell more than 2% and the iShares MSCI Frontier 100 ETF (FM) fell 0.7%.
