    Kiwi Slips As New Zealand Central Bank Tightens Mortgage Lending

    After almost hitting parity with the Australian dollar last week, the New Zealand dollar has dropped behind again. The Kiwi slipped 1.4% to 0.7023 per U.S. dollar this morning after the Reserve Bank of Australia tightened its loan-to-value rules on housing mortgages. The RBNZ wants to prevent a housing bubble and tighter financing conditions discourage foreign capital inflow, which dents the currency.

    Will Kiwi Hit Parity With Aussie?

    New Zealand's currency has been strong lately, with the kiwi strengthening to a one-year high of 0.73 per U.S. dollar and to a 14-month high of 0.97 against the Australian dollar. Global investors are looking around the world for yield and they've headed to New Zealand. New Zealand's benchmark interest rate of 2.25% is the highest among developed countries.
