Born in Europe, the concept of sustainable investments has exploded, with global assets under management rising more than 60% in two years, to $21 trillion in 2014, according to the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance. In the U.S., sustainable invested assets have risen to nearly $6.6 trillion, or one of every six dollars under professional management, a trend that Barron’s highlighted in an Oct. 8 ranking and analysis, “The Top 200 Sustainable Mutual Funds.” But the common perception in Asia is that investors don’t care whether companies are socially and environmentally responsible—emerging markets, after all, offer high-risk, high-reward opportunities that are tough enough to realize without having to meet other goals. Of the $21 trillion worldwide, Asia is thought to manage less than 5% with an eye toward sustainability.
