Hundreds of thousands of London commuters were left with no train service on Tuesday as the latest strike in Britain's worst rail dispute in decades brought more travel misery the day after major disruption on the capital's underground system. Drivers working for Southern Rail, which runs services from central London to Gatwick Airport and Brighton on the south coast, began a 48-hour stoppage in a dispute about whose job it should be to open and close the train doors which has already led to more than 25 days of strike action. Southern, run by Britain's largest train operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) - a joint venture owned by London-listed Go-Ahead GOG.L and France's Keolis, said almost none of its 2,284 services would run and advised its customers not to travel.

Prime Minister Theresa May criticised a wave of strikes sweeping Britain as unacceptable action that showed "contempt" for ordinary people in the run-up to Christmas. Among planned strikes this month are walkouts by airline cabin staff, baggage handlers, rail conductors and Post Office counter workers. "If these strikes share one thing in common, it's a shared contempt for ordinary people who are just trying to go about their daily lives," May's spokesman said on Monday, adding that parties should negotiate to avoid action.

A strike by train drivers which has brought rail services in southern England to a standstill and caused chaos for hundreds of thousands of London commuters will continue after talks on Thursday failed to end the dispute. Drivers on the Southern Rail network will begin a 24-hour stoppage at midnight following two days of strikes earlier in the week which caused Britain's worst rail disruption for two decades. "Passengers and businesses are being held to ransom by the unions' wholly unjustified and unnecessary industrial action," said Nick Brown, Chief Operating Officer of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR).
