McKinsey Global Institute expects the global payment industry to generate $2.2 trillion in revenue by 2020, up 22% from 2015. Global Payments (GPN) provides technology and services to help small and midsize merchants process more than seven billion electronic transactions a year. Global Payments shares have more than tripled in the past five years, to $78, although the stock has been flat for nine months, partly due to concerns about the impact of the U.K.’s pending exit from the European Union.
Vantiv, Global Payments and other could look beyond tuck-ins to major consolidation.
