    Cincinnati firm to pay $28M to settle kickback claims

    The Cincinnati-based Omnicare division of CVS Health Corp. has agreed to pay more than $28.1 million to the federal government to settle a whistleblower lawsuit that alleged the firm sought and received tens of millions of dollars in kickbacks from drug manufacturer Abbott Laboratories. Omnicare is the nation’s largest provider of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy consulting services to nursing homes. The firm fills more than 100 million prescriptions annually, and federal regulations require consulting pharmacists such as those provided by Omnicare to ensure that residents get appropriate medications.

    Omnicare Inc, the largest nursing home pharmacy in the United States, will pay about $28.1 million to resolve civil charges that it sought and received kickbacks from Abbott Laboratories to promote the drug maker's anti-seizure drug Depakote, the U.S. Justice Department said Monday. Omnicare was acquired by CVS Health Corp in 2015, about six years after Omnicare put a stop to the conduct at the heart of Monday's settlement, the Justice Department added.
