Fidelity Investments said on Thursday that it plans to launch its first six "smart beta" U.S. stock exchange-traded funds in one week, on Sept. 15. The batch of ETFs represents a new direction for Fidelity, one that follows the funds industry down the path to create index-based fund strategies that perform as though they are quasi-actively managed, aimed either at beating benchmarks either on absolute or risk-adjusted terms. Dividend-focused and value ETFs are broadly considered to be smart-beta, as are newer ones that aim to capture "low volatility." Each new Fidelity ETF, first outlined in May, comes with an expense ratio of 0.29% of assets per year, or $29 for every $10,000 invested.
