John LaForge has been a student of gold and its relationship with other assets for more than two decades. Despite its exalted status in human history, gold, he says, is a commodity and usually moves in the same direction as other commodities. “Gold is the beauty queen, but at the end of the day it is a cousin in the commodity family, and if the family is going to be sick, gold is going to be sick, too,” said LaForge, the head of real asset strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, in a recent interview with Barrons.com.
