The new designation carved out most high-yielding REITs from the financial sector, where for years they bunked alongside banks, insurers, and asset-manager stocks in benchmarks created by S&P Dow Jones and MSCI. The indexing firms were prompted to make the change by REITs’ rising prominence: The sector now represents about 3% of the S&P 500’s market capitalization, up from nearly zero 13 years ago. Exchange-traded-fund investors won’t notice tweaks to the taxonomy right away, though there’s reason to believe that the reclassification will eventually drive new money into REITs.
