Mediaset said on Thursday French media group Vivendi had told it in letter that an interim management accord over the Italian broadcaster's pay-TV unit no longer stood. "The main consequence of today's formal letter is the implicit recognition of the validity of the existing contract," Mediaset said. Vivendi has backed out of an April deal to buy Mediaset's pay-TV arm and the two groups have been battling since over the validity of the original accord.

PARIS/MILAN, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Vivendi hopes to make a new offer for Mediaset's pay-TV business by the end of next week to try to end a dispute between the French and Italian media groups that erupted in July, a source close to matter said. Under the preferred scenario Vivendi is working on, shares of Mediaset Premium would be divided evenly between Vivendi, Mediaset and a third party, which would most likely be an investment fund, the source said on Friday.

Mediaset Premium's figures were "artificially-inflated" and the deal will likely become void when it misses a regulatory deadline, said Vivendi CEO.
