    Sumitomo plant has added 130 jobs since October to prepare for $87M expansion

    The announcement that Sumitomo Rubber Industries will make a four-year, $87 million investment to double the tire output of its Town of Tonawanda factory was made this morning. Since that time, Sumitomo has made clear the move gives it greater independence to pursue aggressive growth in the United States, with a specific focus on designing and producing tires for passenger cars and light trucks. The proverbial wheels have been grinding locally since October – when the Sumitomo/Goodyear breakup was finalized – as about 130 people have been hired at the Tonawanda factory since that time, said Tim Noe, effectively the Tonawanda plant manager whose title is senior vice president of manufacturing for Sumitomo Rubber USA.
