    Virginia Ex-Governor Pleads Not Guilty to U.S. Charges

    Former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell, once a rising star in the national Republican Party, pleaded not guilty to charges that he used his office to help a businessman in exchange for loans and gifts. McDonnell, and his wife, Maureen, were allowed to remain free without bail while awaiting trial after an appearance today in federal court in Richmond, Virginia. Both were ordered by U.S. Magistrate Judge David Novak to surrender their passports. Novak warned all the participants in the case, which has been a running story in the Virginia and Washington press for months, against leaks, saying “the gamesmanship with the media ends now.”
