Travelers Cos. (TRV:NYSE) By Sandler O’Neill + Partners ($117.01, July 21, 2016) On an absolute basis, Travelers’ (TRV) second-quarter earnings results were rather impressive with a double-digit operating return-on-equity and especially so in light of the catastrophe-loss preannouncements by a number of its peers in the quarter. It seems like somehow the company missed many of the large catastrophe losses that struck other property-casualty insurers. A negative in the quarter was that its underlying combined ratio (combined ratio excluding catastrophe losses and favorable reserve development) deteriorated by 1.7 points year-over-year driven by higher non-catastrophe weather-related losses year-over-year and to a lesser extent, the impact of loss cost trends that exceeded earned pricing.
