With the international Brent price of oil retreating from $50 per barrel, the iShares MSCI Emerging Market exchange-traded fund (EEM) was under pressure at the open. Iran's position on an oil production freeze are behind the push and pull in oil prices ahead of a September OPEC meeting. Among the headlines in emerging markets today: With Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff facing an imminent impeachment trial, her appeal seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Rousseff read an open letter earlier this month that said, in part: "“I’m asking the senators not to carry out an injustice and condemn me for a crime I did not commit ...” The New York Times reported. The outlook for the Brazilian real is improving, Bloomberg reports.

Equities in Turkey are moving lower after the central bank cut its overnight lending rate by 25 basis points, marking a sixth straight month of reductions. Turkey's fresh rate cut puts the country's overnight lending rate at 8.5% and is evidence Turkey's monetary policy council (MPC) "is paying scant regard to its inflation target and more attention to moves in the currency, which has strengthened," writes William Jackson, a senior emerging markets economist at Capital Economics in London. The iShares MSCI Turkey exchange-traded fund (TUR) was down 0.7% in recent trading.
