Here's how much Facebook data center would pay in electricity costs

Social networking giant Facebook would likely pay around $31 million annually to the Public Service Co. of New Mexico (PNM) in electricity costs if it chooses to locate a massive new data center here. The PRC had asked for a comparison of costs under PNM’s existing special service contract for large customers from 2011 versus the special service contract the utility worked out with Facebook. John Olmsted, a project manager in PNM’s pricing and cost of service division, noted in the filings that an estimated monthly demand of 66,000 kilowatts supplied via a mix of solar, wind and nonrenewable resources would lead to an annual cost to Facebook of $35,284,681 under the 2011 rate, and $30,851,423 under the proposed special service contract.

Public hearing set for Facebook data center energy needs

New Mexico may just have inched ahead of Utah in a competition to land a Facebook data center potentially worth billions. The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission responded Wednesday afternoon to a request by Public Service Company of New Mexico to streamline approval for a proposed Facebook data center and set a public hearing date of Aug. 9 at its Santa Fe headquarters. PNM, which is a part of PNM Resources Inc., worked with the tech giant on a special services contract for what it called "unique energy needs." The company submitted that contract and an application on July 8 for expedited approval without a public hearing by Aug. 31.
