Jan. 2, 2007
Check withholding
Hang onto your last 2006 pay stub. You'll want to compare it to your W-2, when it arrives, to make sure the correct withholding amount is shown on the tax form.

Jan. 10, 2007
Deadline for reporting tips income
Work for tips? If you received more than $20 in tips in December, today's the day you need to report that income to your employer (and the IRS). Use a Form 4070.

Jan. 12, 2007
E-filing begins
The IRS starts accepting electronically filed forms today. If your 2006 income was $52,000 or less, you might be able to e-file your 1040 for free using the IRS's Free File program.

Jan. 15, 2007
Holiday delays deadline
Today is officially the due date for the final quarterly estimated tax payment of 2006, but because this year it's a federal holiday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), filers get an extra day to complete their 1040-ES forms. Any time a filing due date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline is automatically moved to the next business day.

Jan. 16, 2007
Estimated quarterly taxes
Pay your estimated tax quarterly? If so, this is the due date for the final 2006 Form 1040-ES voucher.

Jan. 31, 2007
Tax forms hit the mail
Employers must have W-2 forms to employees and 1099s to independent contractors. Companies that pay interest or other forms of compensation must give individuals documents detailing those earnings or profits. This includes interest earned, dividends and other corporate distributions, mortgage loan interest, royalties, amounts paid in broker and barter exchange transactions, certain gambling winnings, prizes and awards, profit-sharing distributions, retirement plan distributions, original issue discounts, and debt cancellations.

Avoid underpayment assessments
If you didn't make your fourth quarter estimated tax payment on the 16th; file your return and pay any tax due today to avoid an underpayment penalty.
