The good news? eBay shares have rallied over 20% from their March lows, the recent change in listing fees proved a success after some gnashing of teeth by sellers, and analysts are upbeat heading into the company's earnings Wednesday evening.
The bad news? See above -- or watch my accompanying video with Eric Savitz, Barron's West Coast Editor and author of the Tech Trader Daily blog.
That's not to say Savitz or I are bearish on eBay. But in this environment high expectations can be deadly for stocks, and there's chatter on Wall Street that eBay will surpass the "official" consensus for earnings of 39 cents per share and revenue of $2.08 billion.
Given the buildup and "whispers," (relatively) new CEO John Donahoe may have his hands full on eBay's conference call if results and guidance aren't bullish enough to satisfy the crowd. Plus, Donahoe should expect a question or two about eBay's plans for Skype after recent rumors of a possible sale to Google.
The feedback system should not have been changed. You must be able to give feedback to buyers. But deadbeat buyers SHOULD NOT be able to give negative feedback to a seller/
Listing fees still too high. Feedback is a 2 way street. How about all deadbeat buyers that don't pay, or have to be hounded to pay, or ask if you'll take less than their winning bid. Crack down on these buyers along with bad sellers. don't just come down on the sellers.
It's all he said, he said. I believe the appropriate comparison is buying a pig in a poke when you buy online until you can establish authenticity. Sellers could name specific buyers just as easily as deadbeats abd run names and addresses through a database.
The new feedback system and the new fee structure (higher fees to sellers) will cause problems. The large eBay retailers seldom have prices that are significantly better than discount stores (compare a digital camera at Costco vs. eBay.) The little seller, selling a $20 item is squeezed by higher eBay fees, PayPal fees.... Sometime down the road, a good competitor WILL come along and it WILL make things more interesting.
Like AOL did to its peril, eBay changed at the expense of the customer experience. Sure, eBay now makes more $$$, but it's now also easier for the competition to get a piece of them. Of course, new-CEO John Donahoe is under pressure to make Wall Street happy, but he needs to remember that it's Main St. who's paying his salary. Personally, I used to visit eBay on a daily basis, I now visit CraigsList.org to 'window'shop' (which ultimately leads to me buying stuff).
They are WRONG! Ebay is on a downward spiral! The fact is Listings did go up...Ebay (Donahoe) decided that they needed their listings to rise due to ending the first quarter. How did they do this? They offered sellers to list their items for a fee of .01 Ebay's listings were a bit under 13 million and due to this 'SPECIAL' it rose up to 17 million listings. Looks really good for ebay and their first quarter. Go look at Medved charts and you will see the spike during the penny listings. We did strike Feb. 18 and it did cause a 13% decrease in listing and we now are BOYCOTTING Ebay MAY 1ST. As of today yet another change, Ebay plans to rid itself of live auctions. So many changes, Increased fees, Seller can no longer leave proper feedback, Best Match (hides sellers items), DSR ratings a mess, padded listings, 21 day Paypal hold, Digital media hidden, & Australia's Ebay is now making Paypal mandatory. Donahoe is the DEMISE of Ebay.

I've given upon eBay. Too expensive for the average person to sell anything. When buying, prices aren't any better than other online stores. I love craigslist.org. Better than eBay, more local, and less corporate. eBay lost me a couple of years ago.
I'm a buyer on eBay and I sell the purchases locally. I buy used items that a like new and at a good price. If someone really wants the item and bids higher, then so be it. There will be another listing and I'll wait. I used to sell on eBay auctions but I'm not set up to make it my main business. I've been advised to list on eBay stores, since the listing fees are cheapest. When I shop the stores, rarely do I find items cheaper than at the auction. The promoters that give seminars on how to make a fortune on eBay and then hawk their cheap goods on the uninformed clients to sell on eBay are boosting the listings but not, in general, selling. That will hurt the eBay experience down the road. Like any other internet company, they can change on a dime's notice and compensate for losses.

Listing fees are down but selling fees way up - smoke & mirrors stuff. Sellers can no longer leave negative feedback for a bum buyers and the basic premise of eBay has been destroyed by that move. Trust & Safety Dept short on understanding of business practices. Counterfeits galore in many catagories - high priced collectibles/coins/fashion items. Does anyone at eBay have a degree in common sense? Or even been in business before for any length of time? Selling fees so high - can buy many items from same seller at their own internet site cheaper than what they have to charge on eBay. Before long I expect they will start charging buyers a fee too. Watching some of the discussion groups on eBay you can see large amounts of user dis-content.
I have been selling on ebay for 10 years with 4 powerseller ids, close to 35000 feedback in total with a feedback of 99.8 for ten years. Now listing fees are up, sales are down 66%. Best Match has forced us down the ranking even though we use Yahoo sponsered search. Sellers with worse DSR's than us and lower feedback have higher rankings. It is the worst experience on Ebay we have had in ten years Our paypal and ebay fees are close to 50% of what we make, and all of this is before they implement no negative response for poor buyers. How on earth can anyone say this is good.
I STOPPED SELLING ON E-BAY 2YRS. AGO. IT COST ME MORE THAN I MADE. J
Ebay's new fee structure has chased away lots of small sellers in favor of large sellers. What ebay doesn't realize is tha many of the small sellers are also buyers, so revenue will fall off or stagnate.
Check out boycottlinks.org. Aussie sellers are being told that Paypal will be the only Payment method from June 17th . Huge reaction by freedom loving folks there . The ACCC (Consumer Affairs) has many submissions as this seems to break establish trading laws big time .
I've been investing longer than I've been eBaying. I don't listen to the hype...like this video...what a bunch of BS. Listen to the people who buy and sell, not eBay management. They may survive the backlash but it WILL NOT be from their auction business. They will have to totally reinvent themselves to survive because they've already burned this bridge with their older/smaller sellers who put eBay & paypal on the map. By the way...these specific sellers are also the largest majority of their BUYERS. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. I sold this stock months ago and put the money into a company that actually cares about their customers opinions. The ole gal who started the biz got out while the getting was good....not as dumb as we think she is. Read the comment above about the Penny listing they offered in the first quarter...this was meant to show some highly inflated figures instead of the real results from their ever decreasing customer base...the SELLERS hwo pay ALL the fees... SELL SELL SELL Booya!

Great reading, ready for more, it's just amazing how many people feel the same way I do about all the changes ebay is making, they even called me to let me know about some of them, I had a few questions myself, but that didn't matter, so, I get more views of my items on www,efleaa.com than ebay, WOW, Ebay is finally giving others a chance, thanks! A great ebay alternative ... welcome to the new old ebay www.efleaa.com

My opinion - ebay`s new design was a mistake. Now it is getting harder to find what you search for + the feed-back system is shrinked..
