As CEO of eHealth, Gary Lauer spends a lot of time in Washington talking to politicians about health care. The biggest problem to his mind is that 46 million Americans don't have insurance. That's frustrating since his site hooks up individuals with health care plans for as little as $100 a month. In fact, 40% of eHealth's customers were previously uninsured.
But it'll take more than a Web site to cure what ails the U.S. health care system. Here's where Lauer stands on:
Lauer also offered practical tips for the self-insured. Plus, a closer look at why eHealth’s business model may be more recession-proof than other e-Commerce sites, experiencing weakness.
Sounds like the silent boycott of this greedy industry is finally having a positive effect on health care insurance affordability.
I hope everyone has healthcare... but is healthcare a right?
Health insurance is not a right. I didn't wait for the government to provide me with health insurance. I went and got insurance on my own ..Take responsibility..
Health care is not a right, nor should it be. Penalizing healthy people and forcing them to pay for the health care of unhealthy people doesn't promote health. Also, putting things in the government's hands will only increase the waste and corruption that is already so prevalent. Insurance companies enjoy some of the highest profit margins of any industry. Health care itself is overpriced. We need competition between hospitals. Make them give you an estimate for the care before you go in or don't go.
Supposedly Massachusetts has health care for all that is based on a partnership of individual, state and business sharing the cost. Why doesn't anyone talk about the results of this program?
We have become a disease care weather than a health care society. treat, treat, treat that's all doctors know. Better management of health care research is one thing that should happen. Take Diabetes; 25 to 30% of Americans are either pre-diabetic or already diabetic. Complications of this disease, kidney heart, eye & a host of other illnesses are a by product of diabetes. This disease needs to be cured. 28 billion is spent on research. Diabetes has been around since the early 1900's. Drug companies are big part of the problem also.
The US system is broken. Health insurance companies are in the business to make money not help people. Money! I know we live in a capitalist system but healthcare should be for health first and it's not.
When I was a kid in the sixties, hospitals were non-profit organizations... .. ah.. the good ol days.. health care a right.. no but the right thing to do in a wealthy nation.. but health care in a fast food nation seems contrarian.. hmm.. are we still wealthy?.. Next stop DOW 7500.. everybody get on board...
HERE THE PROBLEM. Government regulate no test for Mad cow dz. Government force us horrible vaccines that poison us. We eat tainted foods due government interference. Pharmacy's sell and force bad drugs that get us sick, even if we like to chose alternative medicine or eat better foods that cost more, even though we shouldn't have to be in that situation. So get us sick = money for Drug companies = high cost medical bills that maybe that could have been avoided to put us in a position to wipe us out financially. And yet the government wants mandate health care. HA Look at the Veterans administration. Look at Canada. They want us people on drugs so our brain goes to mush and be slaves.
Medicare for all!! Even though they can kick you out after open heart surgery after only 4 days like they did my mom who is dead now!! Wonderful system!! They made $300,000 k and my mom lost her LIFE!! Oh well!! They got paid!!!!!

The reason they kick you out is because medicare can't afford to pay the outrageous cost!!!!
The European model works. It's based on preventative medicine, much of it given to children. It costs taxpayers there less than what we have here due to broke, uninsured people who are brought into the ER when the neighbors can't take the screaming anymore and call an ambulance or the fire department. That also ties up the FD, so your McMansion might burn down, unless you can afford to retain your own private security force/medical/FD. There are those who can, and do. But there's also this thing called "economy of scale", which allows you to receive goods and services at a lower price by buying as a group in really large quantities. We don't have that here- and we used to. Look- all you outsourcers whining about self sufficiency have probably been to Europe- what do their teeth look like? Pretty good, right? How about the general health of their people. Likewise, huh? Yes, you can afford health care- great, I'm genuinely happy for you. But it costs you. It costs me too. What we have is broken. Grow some stones, and take the chance required to try something else.
If they would do something about stupid law suites and stop illegal immigration because there is a hell of a lot of money that is never recovered I love in a small community and are hospital lost almost one million in total expenses in one year just with illegal immigration people amagion a place like L.A. Dallas
I question if anyone who is advocating the European/Canadian model of socialized medicine has ever really been to those countries or actually seen it in action. It, too is broken. TEETH- are you kidding me? Many, many do not have teeth! Unless someone is about to die, literally, the wait time for surgeries is unbelievably long. You would probably argue with them also, about what they call "elective" surgery! When the government provides it for ALL, it means longer waits, etc. Socialized ANYTHING is not good!!!
People need to remember that Medicare is somewhat like Social Security, in that it can't cover everything. The individual needs to supplement with additional coverage. Social Security was never intended to be retirement! It is a supplement. People need to plan for their retirement days while they are young. Many spend every penny, as if they will be working forever! I would not wait for the government to provide me with coverage! I could be waiting a long time! And, in addition, when one allows someone to totally take care of them, then they also allow themselves to totally controlled by them! That's when you'll have "Big Brother" like you never seen before!
You stupid libs are a bunch of idiots. I personally know many people who CHOOSE not to have healthcare. They dont want their employer taking fees out of their check. They CHOOSE it on purpose even though they can afford it. Not everyone wants healthcare you dumb libbies.

Something, and certainly increasing the importance placed on preventive healthcare, needs to be done -- but I cringe when some claims "healthcare is a right." Tell me, of our rights as defined in the Bill of Rights, which one of those guarantees us a good, product or service? Healthcare is not free, healthcare requires money to function, and healthcare is a service. Granted, it is a service that many of us cannot do without -- but just as you don't see a "right" to water or to food, the founding fathers did not see fit to issue us a "right" to the care of a doctor. Medical care is important -- but do not dismiss the correlation between our current economic woes and the mentality that just because someone "is" that they deserve a product. Follow down this path long enough and you will discover the basis for our country's current situation: people declaring that, yes, they deserve that big house, that fancy car, that big screen -- no matter their bank account balance because they "are," so they deserve. And since they "deserve," they purchase on credit, or on credit's credit. Bottom-line: it takes money, not credit, to live in this world -- shrink our government, stop issuing welfare checks and food stamps to people with cell phones and cadillacs; cut the government fat, force people's productivity to be the catalyst for improving quality of life -- then get back to me about providing something as seemingly basic as quality medical care to all.
