Wednesday, December 30, 2009, 12:28PM ET - U.S. Markets close in 3 hours and 32 minutes.
The 3G iPhone isn't even out yet but AT&T is already planning steep discounts to lower the cost to $199, Fortune reports.
Such a move is destined to frustrate a lot of people who've recently bought existing-model iPhones, which Fortune also says Apple is planning to phase out.
Arguably, it makes more sense for AT&T to subsidize older iPhones and take advantage of pent-up demand for the 3G iPhone by charging full price, at least initially when the phone is launched -- presumably mid-summer.
But if the Fortune report is true, AT&T would be taking a big step in making the 3G iPhone accessible to the mass market. AT&T will also give Apple a major leg up in its battle for smartphone supremacy over Research In Motion, although that market looks big enough for the both of them.
And AT&T stock price jumps. very nice news for shareholders.
Funny, I don't FEEL hosed.... I think it is great.... maybe it's the stockpile of AAPL that I have in my portfolio... maybe it's the fact that I have enjoyed my iPhone for a year now and don't care that the price is lower now..... I purchased a Nikon lens last year for $900.00... it's $700.00 now.... I still don't feel hosed...... maybe I should have waited until 2010 and bought the lens on Ebay for $250.00.... silly me!
Pity, we don't need your pity, we could afford the phone. This phone is quite possibly the best phone ever, let's be realistic, the $200 version will be a 4-8 GB's and the price will still have go up with disk space and I'm sure reach $400-$500 bones for the 32 GB phone that will be coming out. No big deal, it's just acting like a piece of technology.
These two bafoons are obviously paid to perpetuate rumors. And they both are no where near technical experts. If in fact AT&T is going to subsidize the 3G iPhone by $200 it's done for a few reasons, 1) to combat the "unlocking" of iPhones, sure if you want a "cheap" iPhone to unlock you pay a premium for doing so, 2) $200 doesn't come without clauses, that clause is a new 2 year contract from the date of purchase. So if you already have a phone plan AT&T just won your subscription for another 2 years and Apple gets an additional 2 years of revenue sharing.
One more thing these guys don't realize, is the iPhone was designed to be a ubiquitous device joining mobile phone, the web and music together. Until the iPhone came out unlimited data plans were very expensive and reserved for the corporate user or technophile. With the iPhone it was designed to be one with information, 3G will make getting that information quicker by leaps and bounds over the existing device. So yes 3G iPhone is really that much better a device and it brings Apple's vision of information anywhere possible. Why would you want to continue an older iPhone device when you know no one will buy it. If these guys were in line for the original iPhone they would know that everyone wanted the 8GB version and not the 4GB version and everyone will want the 3G version over the Edge version.
A price drop for Apple IPhone is great news, more people will be able to afford it which transales into higher sales for the company! and great news for those of us who own apple stock, Apple go for it!!! Plus, if the customers called "suckers" by these two are happy with the Iphone, I don't think the price decrease will be such bad news.
Early adopters pay more, but get the leg up on the technology. Thats the way tech works. These two morons are laughable with the endless Apple bashing. This isn't even an Apple story, its an AT&T story thats not even news. AT&T has been subsidizing phones in exchange for a two year contract for years. The fact they are going to do it with the iPhone is great, but hardly news.
Who ever hired you guys should be fired.
Get a life, what new product when introduced does not warrant a higher price, than after it has been outdated with better, faster and superior technology, guess what, a new price and a new product, did these guys ever buy a commodore 64 like I did, or a TI calculator at 350.00, I can still remember and guess what, when I bought those items, I loved them, just as I am sure I will with my new iphone!!
No one has been hosed by Apple, they still have a great phone and if they want to, they can now get a better one. Is'nt it great that something has gotten better.
I have had my iphone for 8 months the best phone i have ever owned. I would pay $400 for the new 3g iphone but if they want to sell it for $200 im in . For all those people who dont have an iphone or smart phone your missing out. I cant belive all the functions the iphone has amazing like the other guy said best tech purchase ever.
This means only one thing for Apple - $200 share price by mid summer. I've heard additional rumors that the new phone will include a GPS. It that's true. The iPhone is going to explode. As for the gentlemen's comments about the Blackberry keyboard being superior to Apple's keyboard - just nuts. There is about a week learning curve to getting the hand of the iPhone's keyboard. However, it's almost like the phone learns what you want when you type - kinda spooky. The iPhone keyboard works as well as the Blackberry once you get the hang of it. Additionally, the keyboard goes away when you don't want it - unlike the Blackberry's keyboard.
This is why I don't wait in line when big movies come out. This is why I don't wait in line when new game consoles come out. Whoever can't wait always get hosed. Its called greed. Don't cry over your own greed losers. Juse hose yourselfs down before making a rush.
The authors of this tripe should go out and by 'Journalism For Dummies' and at least get some of the basics down. It's pretty clear they didn't study it before landing this gig; jackasses.
Can the producer do everyone a big favor to ask these twins to put their ugly hands down. Those BIGS hands keep making the same meaningless movemoves which add NO value whatsoever, except to make the vedio unwatchable. They are doing it day after day.
