Wal-Mart to Sell iPhones, But at What Price?

Posted Dec 08, 2008 12:09pm EST by Aaron Task in Investing, Electronics

Apple's iPhone is one of the few products selling well this holiday season and Wal-Mart is one of the few retailers where people are shopping these days. So some marketing geniuses have decided (ta-da) it makes sense to sell iPhones at Wal-Mart stores.

Actually, it is a very good idea for both firms: Apple is seeking to dominate the smartphone apps market like Microsoft dominates PC software. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart is looking to cement its reputation as the essential retailer — and not just in bad times.

This deal should help both companies pursue those goals, although various reports say the iPhone won't be available in Wal-Mart on Dec. 28, which may cannibalize some holiday sales.

The key issue of contention right now is the price, with many sources refuting the "$99 iPhone" story, as AppleInsider.com details.

I don't think it will be a $99 iPhone right off the bat...Just like with the G1 they will give you a $50 gift card when you buy the G1 for $178. I would bet they will do the same kind of deal with the iPhone to get it to that price or lower even. since before it happened they were rumored to sell the G1 for $149 then wound up selling it with the gift card would equal to $128...

Will Viyya's software be embedded on these phones? I heard the company was in talks with Walmart awhile ago to put their software on Walmart's phones. It is also no secret that Viyya has been in talks with Apple. Is this the marriage Viyya shareholders have long been waiting for?

Forget iPhones, Walmart should sell Netbooks. They are popular and very hard to find. Computer stores don't like to sell netbooks due to their small profit.

The best way to stop wal-mart is to not buy their merchandise. Buy products from other places instead, ie: k-mart, target etc. So you spend 12 cents more for that bag of chips, or 4 dollars more for the plama you want. This would stimulate the economy all on it's own. of course we won't do this, mainly because we are lazy, in general, and we don 't really care, only about ourselves.

I love it; they’re not selling due to bad economy, less demand and high inventory. Plan (A) $99 at wall mart to lower inventory, but wait for plan (B) you can have it for have it for free, Plan (B) AT&T WILL HAVE GIVING IT AWAY FREE WITH PLAN, to lower inventory and boost up their wireless business.

I would rather buy at Walmart and keep what little money in the US than buy at Target, which is a French owned company, and just think, if JC Penny would have listened to Sam Walton, we would not even be having this conversation. Walmart is US owned and can offer their merchandise for lower prices based on the amount of product they buy at one time.

You know what they say....If you can buy it at Wal-Mart, it is not Cool. (!) A different Apple strategy for sure!

You're all a bunch of douche bags! Price rules in EVERY MARKET except for those that deal with the very wealthy. Competition is good you jag-off's. Always has been, always will be! It gives us better products and better prices. If the product is cheap but of poor quality people are once bitten twice shy and the manufacturer looses in the end with our repeat business. If it was up to your moronic liberal ass-wipe, labour union loving neighbor, we would all be driving crappy overpriced American made cars that needed to be replaced every 4 years....

What all of you have to realize is that the economy has been headed this way for a while. It all started back in the late 70s and early 80s with more and more items being imported with very few taxes and tariffs to protect the American competition. As the imports kept growing in number our exports kept shrinking in number and this will always lead to job loss for manufacturing and production. The countries that import American goods charge steep taxes and tariffs, but America does not do the same. The next things that threw kinks into the American economy were the many different trade agreements that America had with other countries where they could charge steep taxes and tariffs while America could not. Again people, this hurts American industry. As these trade agreements grew, American industry started to shrink, manufacturing and production factories started cutting back on the workforce and eventually started closing down. Then Wal-Mart moved into the neighborhood. As Wal-Marts moved into the neighborhood, more local businesses and some manufacturing and production facilities started to close. As more of this happened around the country, Wal-Mart started finding cheaper and cheaper merchandise to put in their stores. As this kept happening, since smaller businesses could not compete with the prices, they shut down, and since local manufacturing and production facilities could not compete with the price that Wal-Mart wanted to pay for the goods it sells, they went out of business as well. Anyone getting a clue of who one of the main contributors to Americas failing economy is yet? Next, you have NAFTA that good old Bill Clinton signed into law. This is where America took one of the biggest hits. Once this bill was signed, American manufacturing job after American manufacturing job went overseas for cheap basically slave labor. Even as American jobs kept moving overseas, the government kept saying that our economy was booming. Boy did they have us over a barrel. Without a strong industrial (manufacturing and production) backbone, the U.S. will soon be a 3rd world country with all of us trying to figure out where our next meal is coming from while we live in a ditch in the middle of nowhere. Wal-Mart and the U.S. Government sold us to China and other cheap labor countries. We the people need to get rid of NAFTA and demand the government start charging high taxes and tariffs on all imported goods so this country can start manufacturing and producing its on goods again and rebuild our economy.

don't worry, soon we will be bailing wal-mart out too. they build so close together that they will be putting each other out of business. in my neighborhood, they will be building another in a year, that will be three within 7 miles of each other.

apple is crazy if they let walmart sell iPhones for less than apple store. walmart is notorious for getting name brands to sell low-end version in their stores & then partnering with someone else for an even lower-end version that they will promote instead of the name brand.
