Tuesday, December 15, 2009, 4:07PM ET - U.S. Markets Closed.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today he hopes to hold a vote Wednesday on a $15 billion rescue package for U.S. automakers. Some Republicans, notably Sen. Richard Shelby, have threatened to filibuster and stop the bill, but let's assume — for the sake of argument — the bill does pass.
The pending version of the bailout would give a "haircut" to labor, bondholders, shareholders, car dealers, suppliers and executives, according to House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
The legislation, which is mainly designed to help GM and Chrysler avoid imminent bankruptcy, includes the following conditions:
The first point is a step in the right direction as far as giving taxpayers some hope of recouping the "investment" in the industry.
The second point also makes sense although GM's vice chairman Robert Lutz has launched a stern and bizarre defense of GM CEO Rick Wagoner.
"This has nothing to do with trying to improve the executive team," Lutz told the New York Times. "This is the equivalent of the Incan or Mayan days when everybody would go to the top of the volcano and throw a virgin in. It's the feeling that if we make a sacrifice that somehow the gods would be appeased."
The third point is the least defensible. Most troubling, some of the names being discussed for "car czar," notably former Fed chairman Paul Volcker and 9/11 victims' fund lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, have much more experience dealing with Washington bureaucracy than with the auto industry.
Doesn't the term "czar" come from a Russian Monarchy, or communism. Interesting choice of term in these conspiracy filled times. Go figure
I think it is a mistake to bail out a company that new this day would come. they sat back and made cars nobody wanted and still continued to produce. I say let them file bankrupt and reorganize like some of the retailers in the past. why should tax payers bail them out!
Likely to see a lot of "czar" like moves with the incoming administration. Socialism is nothing but a precursor to communism anyway.
Do not trust the Big 3- First they say they need money now (by Dec 2008), then they say they have enough to get them to Jan 2009, the n they say we don't need your money, then we need your money for insurance, then we really need your money NOW!, Just what is the story? They are making threats like thugs. They have no plans; If they did it would take them over a year to change the direction of these slow moving tankers. (That would mean over $120B to fund them for the year) Let them sink. Use the $15Billion to retrain the few workers who are willing to work for less than the $70/hr (effective cost for each auto assembler). We, taxpayers are getting ripped off again.
Oh, yeah! Let's have a "car czar" who has no experience in the auto industry. Then we can totally destroy what's left of a once proud American industry.
WHy do they think they could us my Tax money the executives have a plan to put the money in there seveance packages, like the other guys from the Banks 19 day on the Job and got 19 million come on . tell them to give up already ..
Czar is the Russian version of "Ceasar". Rome and Caesar were so famous and successful everyone from the Russians to the Seljuks wanted to claim a piece of it.
^ That kind of backwards though process is one reason the auto industry is in trouble, Toyota recalled a much higher percentage of their vehicles than GM - wouldnt that mean GM is a higher quality. It is all about perception my friend, stop reading the front page of the National Enquirer and do some research!
Remove the heads of GM and Ford as they have all failed, let the company go into bankruptcy, even if they don’t go into bankruptcy the jobs will still be lost, and we all know that this fifteen Billion dollars will not stay then from it, they will be back in three to six months begging for more money . Let the other companies take up the slack and increase their market share, they do seem to make the cars that ppl want and they do seem to be better for the internment, thy will hire more ppl as there company grows.
Build a decent car and I will buy one. Every car I've ever owned (except one) was foreign. Why? Because domestic cars suck: Poor gas efficiency, high (and constant) maintenance costs, low performance, and bad styling. Also, why should the executives at the big three get fired? Because they made bad decisions and ran their companies into the ground. You can buy an American built Toyota or Nissan. Death to the Big Three!
I do not like the sound of hair cut for bond holders. I am retired and live off of the interest which I thought was the American way.
with all this, i don't see why they just don't let them file chapter 11 and have the U.S. (us) guarantee the loans after bankruptcy instead of a czar, you have a judge, probably less likely to be corrupted. oh, but we couldn't do that. The Union contracts would all have to be redone.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! NOT EVERY AMERICAN OWNED CAR AND TRUCK COMPANY IS THE SAME! TRY SOME FORD PRODUCTS -- FUSION AND EDGE, IN PARTICULAR. I TESTED THESE AGAINST HONDA AND TOYOTA'S PRODUCTS AND BOUGHT THE FUSION. IT HAS BEEN A GREAT PRODUCT IN EVERY WAY! I DON'T BELIEVE IN BAILING OUT THE INCOMPETENT (MOST OF GM AND ALMOST ALL OF CHRYSLER) BUT I BELIEVE FORD GETS IT, ALBEIT A LITTLE LATE
with all this, i don't see why they just don't let them file chapter 11 and have the U.S. (us) guarantee the loans after bankruptcy instead of a czar, you have a judge, probably less likely to be corrupted. oh, but we couldn't do that. The Union contracts would all have to be redone.
Remember you live in the USA. Is it not time to help the country? No just your self.
So foreign aid and crop subsidies that go on year after year, with no repayment, don't bother you????
It's amazing how much flack Bush is taking for the current economy (I agree he should share the burden), but these fools in charge are desimating future generations of Americans with their imperialistic behavior. The same names that made Bush look bad will continue to parasite on Obama now. Paulson, Bernanke, Pelosi, Reid and Frank are completely out of control and have no freaking idea what they are doing.
Let me know when we return to the free market system.
