The Storm: BlackBerry's Black Eye?

Posted Jan 27, 2009 01:29pm EST by Sarah Lacy in Investing, Telecom

Sure, Research in Motion’s Blackberry Storm has sold 500,000 units in its first month on the market. But that’s well below the 2.4 million Apple sold of the 3G iPhone in the first quarter it was on the market. And those people who bought the Storm? A good number of them are complaining about a buggy, flawed user experience.

My guest Om Malik is one of the Valley’s experts on telecom and mobile and has hated the Storm since early on. RIM’s problem? Not playing to their strengths in a desperate bid to push back on the iPhone’s success. As for Jim Balsillie, RIM co-CEO, and his contention that the Storm has been “an overwhelming success,” Malik quips that saying he looks like Brad Pitt doesn’t make it the truth. Earlier we discussed:

I knew the Storm was going to suck, so I'll stick to my 9300...until Apple is going to give the iPhone a better camera, video and a BATTERY DOOR?!?!?!

I recall that the first Apple iPhone had many problems which took a long time to solve. This Malik person is clearly biased and one-sided. RIMM products are clearly first-rate. The Storm is RIMM's first touch screen product, and an excellent start...far better than the iPhone start.

the new palm pre has a removable battery. Crack berry should have continued to improve their older platform.

Got my Storm and it's great--have had to reboot a couple of times but that's it.

Its imbecile to compared the Storm with the Isucks. Rimm is the leader and will always maintain its leadership. Isucks is for Igeek.

Om is way off. I have been using the Storm since it launched. This is the best device I have ever used. The Iphone has been flawed since it launched...where are those stories?? Nothing can compare with the security and functionality of the RIM Ecosystem.

The Storm stands on its own. Stop comparing it to the iphone. I've had mine for a month and I can't imagine working without it.

Verizon is my company's choice, so no I-Phone option. I've had a Storm since day one (it was time to trade in my Treo) and I really like the thing. It is very fast (due to the 3G, I guess) and reliable. Email hits the BB before my deskptop. It is outstanding for internet use; primarily because of the big screen. Not sure if I'll ever type as fast without actual buttons, but I'm getting better w/experience....and I think it's a minor inconvenience. People are way too critical. RIM is doing a good job of pushing the technology forward, producing tools that people like me need to compete.

I bought a "Storm" and I absolutely love it. It took a few days to get used to the keypad and after that I have had no issues at all. I went with Verizon and the Storm because AT&T's service really stinks in my area.

I returned my iPhone for a BB Bold. On the iPhone, I could not type, there is no video, battery life and replacement are problems, I could not set up all my email accounts, the monthly plan is expensive compared to BB, etc. I have not tried the Storm yet, but the Bold is a beast.

This old story is used yet again! So why is RIM up 30% since December (up 6% today!) and Apple is not?

True bias raises its head again. But in this case I gave this mark to the Storm defenders. Judge the product for what it is you dotes. Removing the battery to resolve a crash/hang issue is not a reason to have removable battery. Yet there are more than just a few anecdotes pointing to this "feature". RIM is copying Apple's lead in touch screen smartphone left and right to get a piece of the consumer market. The comment referring to Igeek is mistakenly pointing out RIM as a leader. RIM is not leading anymore. They are maintaining their base and copying Apple's technical, marketing and business concepts: Full Browser, AppStore, Investment fund for AppStore Developers, media player, etc. RIM is really good with their push mail - the only concept copied by Apple. Everything else, they are following Apple's trail. I don't blame them. As much as people are tired of hearing it, others are doing the same. iEnvy is bound to happen.

Verizon had the oppurtunity to team up with Apple's Iphone and turned it down. How do I know this because I am a verizon employee. Verizon passed this up because Apple wanted more $ than Verizon wanted to pay them. Verizon screwed up in mu opinion.
