"We know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century," Obama said in his speech Tuesday night. "It is time for America to lead again."
Many green energy advocates say the annual $15 billion of related spending in Obama's plan isn't nearly enough, while critics say so-collared green-collar jobs are a myth and, regardless, won't do much to help an unemployed machinist in the Rust Belt.
Investor and blogger Paul Kedrosky of Ten Asset Management says such debates miss the broader point: Unlike during the growth of computers, when the industry coalesced around the Mac and Windows OS, there is no agreed upon alternative energy platform. As a result, nobody really knows how much money we need - or don't need - to invest in clean tech, which he says is more akin to drug discovery (biotech) vs. traditional tech.
Clean tech is "a giant capital pit" and public investors should only play at the margins, while private investors should focus on technologies like batteries for hybrid cars that play on the edge of existing, established industries, Kedrosky says.
Beyond that, "there's no there there" in clean tech investing, he says.
Where there is a will, there is a way.....? Let's take a short look at how crises tend to unfold.....
One man's pork is another man's job.. just sayin.. campidiot.com
Geez, at least you weaving in some tech between political rantings in this piece, but no stocks mentioned so really, what is tech ticker about this? Why does Yahoo even allow you guys to post this nonsense and get top billing?
I can't believe these guys can float a system for centuries and not really know how it works themselves. Alternative energy focuses on thrift and conservation, not expansion, waste and speculation. This is the reason there is no 'there' for them.
It's even worse. As the existing Coal power plants come off line this power needs to be replaced. 50% of your power is from coal - 50% of that 50% are over their useful life span of 30 years. Between Coal and Nuclear power you have 70% of our present energy sources represented. Add in Natural Gas and you're up to 92%. So....today we are using alternatives to produce about 8% (includes hydro power). I sincerely doubt that you can replace the present system with something that hasn't even been invented yet. We're so screwed......
On this subject this guy's 100% right. Alternative energy makes unproductive elitists feel better while making day to day life prohibitively expensive for truly productive people.
Amazing, the world isn't coming to an end! The media would sure like you to think so. Same with the crooks telling everyone to buy when the Dow was at 14,000. They're telling you to sell now so they can accumulate YOUR shares for cheap. Just watch.

We all know what the problem really is. It is so obvious. INCUMBENTS are the problem. Who are the most corrupt in Washington? The ones who have been there longest. Why? They have more clout. More clout buys more money. Why are they there? We vote for them. We don't need term limits. We need a backbone. They make laws not you. Who will pass term limits legislation? Will you vote to fire yourself from your nice cushy job? No resolve.. No change.. No change.. No hope.. No hope.. Fear rules.. Fear rules.. You lose ... You can turn it around in two election cycles. . Punish them for their incompetence and corruption. Don't reward them! Get em out. Get em out kick em out throw em out.. The new crop will get the message if it is loud and clear. Scare the pants off the newcomers. If you waver, you will continue to get eaten alive!
Is this guy getting his pockets padded by Oil looking for another excuse not to become energy independent. The government's job is to set the goal, which Obama is trying to do and then let the private sector figure out how to get there. Unfortunately the government does have to fund some of the R & D to get things like this accomplished because the private sector will not take the chances the government can. Especially in a downward economy. How do you think we made it to the moon or built the space shuttle?
I would rather use twice the amount of the porkulus bill money (1.5 trillion) to invest in solar panels, wind farms, batteries, NUCLEAR POWER, etc. rather than throw money at the banks, auto industry, OPEC, etc. This type of investment has a great chance of showing good returns for future generations.
Wow, EVERYONE seems to be missing the boat. He's clearly saying that there is too much speculation, and too many solutions, to make clear investment plays. Don't confuse this with the fact that Alternative Energy is the ONLY thing that ultimately solves global warming, WILL establish global leadership, eliminates reliance on foreign energy, will create millions of jobs (yes, including in the rust belt), and keep us alive through the 21st century. You can resist this inevitable change, or lead it.
Alternative fuels are costly and as of right now inefficient. Let the private sector do it, and stop spending my money on things that are going to actually raise my electricity bill.
Geothermal is there with established technology. You could capitalize what it would cost to roll it out in a big way. And the plants would create construction jobs and operating jobs.
This Kedrosky dude, what a short sighted simpleton. The only thing important to him is profit. Hey dummy its not about profit it is about energy independence and keeping hard earned money in this country. The US government must push renewable energy, because those in the private sector don't have the balls and always have the oil companies greasin' anyone who comes up with a better system. What the hell does "there's no there there" mean?
This guy is a genius, he's exactly right. We have too much talk about hybrids, wind energy, clean coal, natural gas, hydro power, solar power, geothermal power, nuclear power, bio-diesel, ethanol, hydrogen power, etc. to really move forward in alternative energy
If I would be the manager of the 15 bil. I would study what is the most efficient known renewable energy (I guess wind energy would win) then sponsor 50% of the home-owner investing in mini-units large enough to sustain a house for example. However , the problem comes when the cheapest devices are made in China. Will China still give their work for Fiat money ?

Sure would like to know what: "Beyond that, "there's no there there" in clean tech investing, he says." means. Can anybody shed some light on this?
