Dean Kamen, Creator of Segway, Unveils New Invention

Posted May 30, 2008 08:00am EDT by Sarah Lacy in Newsmakers, Products and Trends, Information Technology

Famed inventor Dean Kamen is back in front among the tech elite this week with a new invention. The last time we heard from Kamen, he was unveiling the Segway, a product he hoped would revolutionize human transportation, and solve problems like pollution and urban congestion. But unlike the Segway, Kamen hopes his new product never reaches a mass market.

It’s a prosthetic arm that weighs as much as a human arm. It boasts the same range of motion, and the same tactile sensitivity. When the government called on him two years ago to build it, even Kamen wasn't sure his team could build it. In this video he tells us about the experience, what it meant for his career, and what he learned from the Segway experience.

The Segway and the stuff he is doing for the GI's is a very small example of what this guy has done. Its sad when the girl interviewing him does take time to mention more of his creations but just point out one massive failure and one success. Dean is a true inventor and a great part of America.

Dean Kamen is the world's greatest inventor.. ...in his own mind...

Journalists need to present the good with the bad. Otherwise it is not journalism, it's advertising. I'm sure Dean would tell us he learned more from the failure than the success and would want us to know about it. I agree with you, Dean is an amazing person.

Dean Kamen lives in the next town over from me in NH, I've met him several times and he is very approachable. His work with USFirst is amazing, companies that they work with just get it and are more than happy to fund the next generation of engineers. He's always looking to do what many think impossible. He is one of a kind.

I agree he is a great inventor ahead of his time. His father was a great artist as well.

The Segway is truly the epitome of uselessness.

I'm sure Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin invented some dogs as well. Hats off to Kamen!

This guy is incredible. Add his name next to Edison, Franklin, Bell as an American Treasure.

I love this guys energy and approach to solving problems. But when you look at the population that will use this it is extremely small. The truth is that the vast majority of upper exremity amputees do not use their prosthetics very long. They tend to be cumbersome and unweildly in daily life. I would like to see some independant thinking for lower extremity amputees. There is a much higher usage rate.

Balance and hyper-sensitive prosthetics...yup, this is the groundwork for the actual terminator.

If more people worked as hard and were as dedicated to their dreams as Dean Kamen America wouldn't have the problems of being dependent on welfare, foreign oil and job security. If you learn nothing from this man appreciate his work ethic and instill it in your kids. It's a new world so step it up.

The segway is nothing compared to his water purification device. Talk about something that could revolutionize the world! Its always the mundane things...

I think that to only see this as useful to amputees is understating its potential. It would seem to me that it would be very useful as a remote arm for something else as well. (bomb squad, undersea probe, etc.) If the tactile sense is part of the aparatus, why not couple it with the Honda human-like robot and send it to hostile climates on earth or mars instead of people? I think there are many more possibilites.

That arm approaches one of the goals I have been working for in one of my own projects. A prosthetic arm that is close to being the same as the real thing. The primary difference between that one and the one that I am working on is the control mechanisms. Absolutely nothing in this world feels as good as helping to improve the quality of life for others.

mikeyboy954 said "The Segway is truly the epitome of uselessness". Try telling that to people who can't walk...great way for them to get around. My Pastor uses one and he moves around better than I do. Great invention the Segway is!!!

I applaude his effort on the prosthetic arm. It is a great invention, but we should not need this because of this stupid war. The lost of limbs from this war is so unnecessary. I hope our current president can sleep at night for what he had done. So many lives and limbs lost because of this unnessary war.
