Amazon Solid Q1, Crappy Guidance*

Posted Apr 23, 2009 05:20pm EDT by Henry Blodget in Investing, Internet, Products and Trends, Recession, Mobile

From The Business Insider, April 23, 2009:

Amazon reported a solid Q1, beating consensus on the top and bottom lines.  Some of the EPS upside came from a slightly lower than expected tax rate.

Q2 adjusted operating margin guidance was somewhat weak: $200-$280mm, vs. $250mm consensus.*

Overall, the company seems to be in excellent health, especially considering the state of the economy.

Revenue: $4.9B vs $4.75B consensus
Reported Op Inc: $244mm vs. $155MM consensus.*
EPS: $0.41 vs. $0.31

Here's JP Morgan's Imran Khan's summary of the results:

* Analysts use different operating income metrics for Amazon.

Not sure why they didn't mention the Amazee and IMDB.GS issues. Those darn Harvard kids. http://www.einnews.com/pr-news/29320-harvard-student-launches-imdb-gs-a-free-social-networking-tool-for-indie-filmmakers

Leave Henry Blodget alone. He's working hard to communicate important info to the the public now. We have ALL made mistakes and then must learn from them and move on. Why not post something intelligent or helpful instead?

lol guidance should be crappy. Who would buy that POS called the kindle.... Maybe I travel in the wrong circle of friends but no one has that crap and yet Bezos claims it is exceeding far above expectations. Show me the #'s you sucker.

When are people going to stop comparing Iphone and Android? Android is an operating system...... like windows CE , You can design any phone around windowsCE or Android except android has a free runtime license.

If Aaron and Henry would stick to tech like the name implies instead of trying to promote some different agenda people would leave them alone. BTW - he should have been communicating this "important" information a year ago. After the fact doesn't make it that imporant anymore.

At least he's covering tech for a change.

not that it matters much to me, but please consider refraining from using the term 'crappy,' especially in a title. While effective in describing your sentiment, the continued use is becoming crass.

Yea, Blodget is a born again human being now. We've all made "mistakes". Let he who hasn't defrauded thousands of their clients (hard working common every day people) of millions of dollars cast the first stone. And besides, his biggest "mistake" appears to have been documentating his fraud and ridiculing his victims in email messages. It wasn't enough to just do it, he had to brag about it. What a piece of CRAP!
