GM Bankruptcy: End of an Era or New Beginning for Detroit?

Posted Jun 01, 2009 11:28am EDT by Aaron Task in Investing, Autos
GM's bankruptcy filing Monday was widely expected but nonetheless has been accompanied by a lot of hand-wringing over the "end of an era."

Clearly there's much to be concerned about, not the least of which being:

  • GM's $173 billion of debt vs. $82.3 billion of assets -- as revealed in Monday's bankruptcy filing.
  • More job losses as GM closes dealers, closes or idles 12 plants, and the UAW accepts more layoffs as part of its deal with the government and the automaker.
  • The perils of government ownership: With the Uncle Sam now the majority owner of GM, the opportunity for political mischief - such as the pressure on GM to sell its Opel unit to Magna - and just plain old bureaucratic inefficiency could stifle any attempt to revive the automaker.

But what if GM's bankruptcy really is a new beginning? As Henry and I discuss in the accompanying video with Jon Najarian of OptionMonster.com, Chrysler's "quick rinse" bankruptcy and even rising oil prices provide an opportunity to think optimistically about the future for U.S. automakers.

because minimum wage for a job that takes no skill is a ridiculous thought ....like holding open a door while someone else bolts a bolt on... i have friends that work there ... oh and getting paid while the plant is closed... also great for business

Yes it was those "terrible" unions that decided to build cars that were garbage in the 70's,80's and 90's! In truth ,some of the big three"s problems can be laid at the unions doorstep however, the management utterly failed in its fiduciary duties to the millions of Americans and others who put their hard earned money into GM stock and bonds. Of course, they(the management)will emerge from this catastrophe with millions in personal wealth that will easily tide them and their heirs over for generations. Paraphrasing Jesus,"The RICH you have with you always!"

i am still confused as to why we will have a nationalized car company, but no nationalized health insurance company... something is wrong with this picture.

Headline - GM Set For Government-Assisted Bankruptcy.. I don't know why they can't do it themselves! Maybe they would screw that up too!

Say goodbye to the new Camaro z28 or any high H.P cars from G.M Harry Reid and good old Nancy will have all of us driving around in little plastic cars from here on in. Bet BMW and the rest are loving what is going on over here.

Re: plantman2329- Giving "executives" obscene bonuses when they contibute to the demise of a once-viable corporation is also GREAT for business. Once they fail at one job, their buddies on other boards bring them in to screw up another company. Only in America! The Peter Principle still rules!

finally i have been saying let them go down the hole this was the best way for such a big company. i work at a pretty big one but nothing compared to gm. when you talk about shaping up even if you get to keep your company and might even save you money. it is so hard for them to even get the most simple thing done. they need to wipe out the over paid salary people and bump up some of the floor people that know about the company and them them clean the place up they would gladly do it for a tenth of the salary or even the floor pay just better benefits.

Any one of the Bloggers could also asked such penetrating questions. The Pundits are to ask, or tell, what will be the future! I am making my wish list!

I see a bright future for Ford and not so for Chrysler or GM. Anytime the goverment is involved in running anything, they screw it up worse. Can't wait for the increase in taxes, I know one thing for certain I did njot vote for this president or adminstration. You people on this blog who did are getting your just deserts, hope you like it!!!!!

Hey, since the American public is now a majority stakeholder in GM, maybe we can "test drive" some of our social engineering projects with comanies like AIG, GM, etc before we impose it on the rest of America. I think Mr. Obama should take his socialized Healthcare scheme and we'll have current Medicare recipients, GM employees, AIG, all use the same government-run healthplan. Maybe we should throw Congress and the Senate (including their dependents and beneficiaries) on the same plan. Sounds like a good way to get all "bugs" out before the rest of us poor suckers are forced onto the plan.

Another $30 billion from tax payers to claim your bankrupt. Does this sound right to anyone else?
