Monday, December 28, 2009, 4:35PM ET - U.S. Markets Closed.
The stock market is struggling to recover from an early dip Tuesday as traders contemplate the latest inflation-fighting rhetoric from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.
The Fed "will strongly resist an erosion of longer-term inflation expectations, as an unanchoring of those expectations would be destabilizing for growth as well as for inflation," Bernanke said in a speech Monday evening.
This is the latest in a series of hawkish comments from Bernanke who is trying to "jawbone" the market into believing the Fed is now focused on fighting inflation and defending the dollar.
Futures markets are now placing high odds on a Fed rate hike in the second half of 2008, helping the greenback hit a three-month high vs. the yen Tuesday while rallying vs. the euro as well.
But rate hike expectations overlook the reality of Bernanke's bind: If he chooses to fight inflation, Bernanke risks scuttling the economy and undermining the very fragile recovery in the financial sector. But if he doesn't act, inflation might spiral out of control.
Bernanke also had some tough comments about oil prices, but crude futures were rallying again after Citigroup and Merrill Lynch upped their price targets while the International Energy Agency lowered its supply forecast.
My concern is Bernanke might fold if and when the financial markets ultimately call his (as well as Treasury Secretary Paulson's) bluff about the dollar and inflation.
My concern is Bernanke might fold if and when the financial markets ultimately call his (as well as Treasury Secretary Paulson's) bluff about the dollar and inflation. If you look what the world does they ignore these boobs. They know our fools in Washington are not going to do anything because they can't. Europe_Asia_ and the rest of the growth world is looking out for itself and works with the US only when it's servers their interest. Otherwise the US is on it's own.
The fed need to raise interest rate. If not the fed should move its reserve to euro..lol
we are occupying Iraq, so lets just take their oil. problem sloved.
Lets invade Venezuala and take their oil. We need to lookout for ourselves.
He is just doing what the Bilderberger's told him to do over the weekend.
so bad.... people telling take oil from iraq, venezuela If Iranians say the same thing then it is crime, terrorism Is this the same country which promoted liberty and freedom for all Where's Nero? the city is on fire
If the only Oil prices would fall; not the SKY as in Chicken Little's, cry of doom. But if our Big chickens in the Beltway coop, Washington DC who are controlled by lobbies, big business and no doubt foreign investors who have their ample pump fingers in the Oil pie, then maybe something might happen. But something must happen as Consumer America, looses it's standard of living. Governments, both state and city crumble do to lack of funds that high related oil prices are bringing on like cancer. Indeed this article is eye opening, when in the first paragraph-- "investors" are the parasites in their greed driving the prices up-up-up and up. But unlike Star Trek at this rate our next five year journey will be aborted in the economic, social and public spheres. Now forgive my probably inflated over emotional clucking like a chicken in the barnyard.
I agree with the previous post. Ray Charles could see that the United States can't look out for ourselves, and thus, why should they?!
OMG, how foolish. DONT invade Venezuala, Iran, Saudi Arabia etc. Invade Canada and steal thier oil. They are much closer, have a smaller army, much more cost effective than even Mexico. Of course the troops might like the Mexican food better!!
This country needs to cut all aid to ALL countrys and take care of this country. Get out of Iraq, or have them pay for it..not us! Our troops all of a sudden can't go anywhere without permission for the Iraq'is..whats with that...get out! This Congress and President has done nothing to help us! Just alot of Bickering back and forth we need to vote out anyone who is in there NOW! Wake up people!! We have had 20 years to correct the problem with OIL..lets not wait another 20 years ACT nOW congress..and if it takes drilling in Anwa..so be it! We need help NOW!! we can always stop drilling when we get our act together. The big oil Co's are doing nothing to search for alt. fuels! We need to start calling writing our people!...and let them know we are fed up with there bickering...and start working for the people who elect you..not big business!
to jjrbus; too late , chinese companies have already bought stakes in canadian oil companies.
What these pigmen don't tell you is it doesn't matter that we invaded iraq on a lie or that we drill in alaska to be oil independant. Oil will be where they bid it and the fed devaluing the dollar to intentionaly rob the consumers by keeping interest rates low. They have the american on life support and sees it as a way to bleed everybodies wealth. They don't serve the public they feed us to the wolves. If that's freedom, it doesn't fit my definition of it.
That's the problem with the US, they're always sticking their nose in everybodys business. Just worry about your own people over here and quit wasting 12 billion dollars a month on that desert trap called Iraq. I'm still waiting on Bush's so-called healthcare reform he promised us back in his 2003 State of the Union address. Let's see, another 7 months to go for this clown, what are the odds he will make this happen? lol
supply and demand is the reason for our inflated prices. people in other countries are now using more oil, iron, food, cement , lumber , and when the demand for these product s out weighs the supply, prices increase. example 2 years ago our economy was fine . iron , food, cement and lumber were high becoause nations like china russia, japan, were experiencing economic growth using these products and when you have economic growth and the demand grows companies need more people and equipment to meet these demands prices go up. now that the demand for oil has grown the price of oil has to go up need more equipment to drill for it so we can meet demands. look what it has done everywhere. everything is drived from oil (piants, plastics, chemicals, fuel needed to get our food grown, havested, moved to the market, then to our homes. it has an effect on every thing wee do in our lives. but you now what . we have oil reserves here in our own country that some people in our government wont let us touch, i suggest that we all speak out to our reps and let them know that we need to let oil companies drill on these properties. we use 60% of other countries oil and only 40% of ours, you want to know why this is because that is all we produce. are we getting scared yet. just imagine, almost a year ago venizuela dictator hugo chavez said he would bring the united state of america to it knees by cutting the supplie of oil off. could this be working. now lets imagine a person buying this oil from chavez and marking it up and selling it to exxon or cheveron or another oil company so they can make our fuel we need to meet the demands, wll we just paid more for that oil because of a middle man, be nice if the oil companie could have bought it but because of old chavez hard head he wont sell direct to the united states but guess what he hit our pocket book and brough us to our knees, and he still makes the same amount of money and packs a punch doing it. our government has protect us from what is happening to us right now for as long as they could now we have competition on uses of oil, they are biding for the amount they need for there usage. this is clearly suppy and demand. we have two solutions to the problem drill in the united states on lands that the liberal wont let us drill on, or seek alternative fuels. think about it and take time to write your reps so they can speak for you on the hill.
The world demand on fossil fuel will keep the pressure on oil prices. The USA has plenty of oil, natural gas and coal but, the politicians continue to refuse to allow the drilling, processing of oil or burning of coal using low emission techniques. The blame other than the gutless politician forwarding a competent energy policy clearly falls the environmental groups that successfully lobby congress. These groups do not care about the American people or our economy. Americans MUST demand from their representatives to allow for large scale domestic energy production. If not, than we can't blame anyone but ourselves. BTW a much larger portion of the price paid for a gallon of gas goes to pay state and federal taxes and NOT to oil company profits.
If our reps in Washington were our true rep. (for the people) the oil prices would not be where they are. These gentlemen are mostly on the take for their reelections, handcuffed to the special interests. Profit is the goal of private interprises, NOT GAUGING. Our democracy has become CORPOCRACY.
What we might do is get rid of the EPA . Then we could start drilling in our oun country . and Alaska . We have enough oil in this country to supply half of the world . Everyone could make a huge profit even selling at $40.00 a barrel . If we did that you would see how fast the other countries would lower there prices .
