Will Lower Ad Spending Tank the Valley?

Posted Feb 20, 2008 04:55pm EST by Sarah Lacy in Internet, Media, Newsmakers, Venture Capital, M and A, IPOs
Amid the howling about a recession, at least one man is still bullish on advertising in 2008...well, bullish compared to most. John Battelle, chairman of Federated Media, thinks advertising will still be up in 2008--if just modestly. He expects online advertising to grow more, as ad dollars shift to more measurable formats than, say, TV. Click to hear why, and who he thinks the biggest winners will be.

As annoying as pop-ups! Have you seen the 30 sec video ad placed in front of every 15 sec video news clip -- how rude! I hit the volume OFF button for the ad, watch the news. Then the next ad, and the news. By the time the third ad appears, I'm so irritated, I shut the whole thing down -- what a waste of time! Too much ad content, not enough news content. Faster, easier and more rewarding to read a newstory than to wade thru the video sound-bite crapola online! WHERE'S THE ONLINE TIVO OR VIDEO AD BLOCKER? HELP!

I think business owners, out of necessity, will cut back on some of the advertising that doesn't seem to work. Internet advertising is getting much more interesting now and will only continue to improve. Choices are expanding and prices are coming down. Its not all about google adwords. It can be as simple as 'enhancing' a business directory listing , that comes up first page on google, or advertising on niche local websites like www.mysandiegolife.com.
