Android Delay: A Blow to Google's Mobile Ambitions

Google's Android mobile platform will be delayed until late 2008, The Wall Street Journal reports -- confirming a recent story in TheStreet.com (yes, my former employer.) According to The Journal, Google is running into difficulties with its mobile partners, T-Mobile, Sprint and China Mobile for a variety of reasons.

"Whimsical wishes of carriers, endless customization, software delays and of course, executive reshuffling - these are facts of life for mobile start-ups," writes Om Malik. "Welcome to the club, Google."

Android's delay is a blow to the search giant's credibility, which is still trying to prove it can be a game-changer in something other than search. This is also a "win" for Apple, which is hoping the iPhone will become more than just a phone, but a platform.

But don't forget about Symbian - and don't count out Google just yet. Many mobile developers are eager to embrace Google's "open" Android platform vs. Apple's "closed" system, says SAI's Dan Frommer.
