America has a serious weight problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 30% of Americans are obese. It's a problem that costs the nation billions and isn't easily solved.
While policymakers debate the solutions, James Altucher, managing director at Formula Capital, recommends several ways to profit from America's growing waistline. Instead of focusing on the diet, fitness and healthy food trend, Altucher digs a bit deeper for some not so obvious calls.
Here are some of his tastiest stock picks:
As for a more traditional choice, Altucher says investors should keep an eye on Nutrisystem. The stock's up 70% in the last year but if earnings - out after the bell today- disappoint, it might be worth buying on a dip.
Nice thumbnail... pregnant woman = obese? WTF Yahoo?!
The same people that got us all into this crisis are still in power and we need to get rid of them to send a message that we are not going to take it anymore. Congress keeps voting themselves raises and more percs while everyone else is getting screwed for the next few generations. The best regulatory reform for Wall St. would be to replace most of Congress. No Senator should be in office more than 2 terms (12 years) and no Congressmen/women should be in office more than 3 terms (6 years) otherwise they do too much harm to us all. VOTE OUT the INCUMBENTS in 2010..
Altucher definitely uses lateral thinking. But remote controls? Reminds me of the 'teleprompter' stock (cannot remember the name) that had its own bubble in 1970 or so...a really sexy technology stock of its day. I was thinking the other day that dishwasher soap (PG) and such things might increase as more people are eating at home. Unless you're in NY.
Peter Gorenstein...that /b in the article is causing all the comments to be bolded! Too bad we cannot do that at will when posting a comment. It would be nice if one of us could close it for you but html edits are blocked in comments. /b
Yeah but if you look like a Harry Potter addict and can't get laid...
What they are doing in the UK is forcing manufacturer to reduce their fat, salt and sugar content. I think we need to use tax to force heathier food. The tax you pay is based on the percentage of fat or sugar in the item and the money goes to fund health care.
I agree, put a tax on fatty food. This is a use tax, if you eat fatty food you pay the tax which can help offset health care costs. If you eat healthy you don't pay the fatty food tax.
To his insider buddies he's probably recommending harpoon manufacturers. His comments are revealing about how he feels about average Americans. Fat, stupid, lazy. Hey speaking of fatso's, where is Task on this piece? He's porking out pretty good these daze.
Dow has trimmed down nicely over the last week. And more to come, I think. By the time she's done trimming down I'd say she'll be a shoe-in for a job with Ralph Lauren.
How about companies that are in the death business: like funeral homes, creamatories, casket-makers, and stuff like that. With increasing obesity and aging baby boomers, the death industry should skyrocket in the next decade. On the other hand, life insurance companies are probably not a good bet.
It's Austin Powers!!!!!! Groooovvvy Baaaaby!!!!!!!!
To san and all them fat tax Nazi's. I am a 46 year old that weighs in at 175 on a 6 foot frame. I also love to eat all of the so called bad food and knock back some coke from time to time. I am also quite healty and very seldom visit a doctor. I am very active and waste little time sitting down to watch tv. That being said I should not have to pay for the fatties who chose to do little other than stuff their pie holes all day. They chose to become fat due to their life styles so let them pay the price for it. And it all comes down to calories in vs calories out. Don't believe me check out Michael Phelps diet and what he looks like. If you want to reduce health care tax the fat ones who are causing the price to go up and not the food or the people who eat it responsibly. No doubt the ones that want to tax the food are indeed FAT FAT FAT. Get up, get moving and save me some money chubby!!!
Someone should check their HTML before they post...
This guy looks like Austin Powers. You too can make one millllllllliioon dollars!
Hey LOOK everyone, POPOY is giving "how to get laid" advice! Might wanna learn the language first though! VERBS, man! And FYI people: I am overweight and do ALL my own cooking! It's not necessarily the FOOD you pick but the processing is wide spread and unnatural. When little girls start having their periods at nine because of all the hormones in milk and chickens, all bets are off and there is no safe/smart/healthy food to be had on the shelf which hasn't been adulterated by greedy corps! STRYKER stock: Knee replacements for the BB's, next big thing!
I agree, put a tax on fatty food. This is a use tax, if you eat fatty food you pay the tax which can help offset health care costs. If you eat healthy you don't pay the fatty food tax.-----------------------------they've done a number of studies and that a fat tax doesn't do anything unless you make it rediculously high like 50%. The tax you are describing doesn't make sense because you are making the healthy people who may from time to time eat a small portion of something not so healthy pay for it. Too bad you can't just charge people a much higher insurance rate if they are obese. They say only about 2% of people are overweight/obese and really can't do much about it because of genetics, everyone else you here complain about is just fat and lazy and not discplined enough to work out more and/or eat less.
Monk - I'm the same way. It's because I don't sit on my ass all day. Completely agreed. It's their lifestyle, not necessarily what they eat.

An investment has a better chance if demographics help. Obesity, aging population, baby boomers are things to consider. However, there is the flip side of this. When the population is aging, they go from borrowers/spenders into savers who do nothing but pay back debt. An entire generation borrowed from the banks, inflated the money supply, and inflated the prices along with it. They lived the good life. Now they need to pay back what they borrowed. When only few does this it is ok, but when an entire boomer generation does this together it creates a boom and a bust. The cause of the crash is the bank credit deflation. This will prove to be headwind against any stock investment! Pick your stocks very carefully, because we are going down like Great Depression! We are at the TOP of a great financial mania. This is not a good time to speculate in stocks. Investors who are long in the stock market are picking pennies on railroad tracks. http://tradingstocks.net/html/prepare_for_market_crash.html
