After Mossberg's review of the 3G iPhone hit AllThingsD.com Tuesday evening - he's the site's co-executive editor - red flags went up among across the blogosphere. Here's a sample of some headlines:
In an exclusive interview with Tech Ticker, Mossberg declined to "review the review," but stressed his review declared the iPhone to be "an excellent device made better" with the new 3G version. (It goes on sale Friday if you haven't heard.)
In the accompanying video, Mossberg and I discuss his top "pros and cons" of the iPhone and why there's so much "sensitivity" when it comes to Apple. Stay tuned for upcoming segments with Mossberg about the App store and what the 3G iphone means for the competition.
Since you don't need 3G to talk, you could leave it off unless you wanted to surf.
Jules - yes you can turn off 3G and I've been told it can extend the battery life to up to 10 hrs (or 2x what you get with 3G on). Rob R- Thanks much! - Aaron Task
If I heard it right, Mossberg did NOT say what he is quoted as saying in the title. The last I heard, misquoting someone to make your story sound better is bad journalism. Very, very, very bad journalism. Shame on you. See 1:45 into the clip.
so if you start to run low on batt. turn off 3g until you can recharge, good to know. See you Fri. fyi: Nice job
stustanton - He said the phrase "undiluted adulation" and the headline made use of that. Notice there are *no quotation marks* in the headline, which we would use if it were a direct quote. - Aaron Task
http://www.video-to-flash.com/flash_video_encoder_console/ I can't say nothings:(
Aaron: Not to split hairs, but when you have the person's name and then a colon, the words following that are assumed to be a quote, with or without quotation marks. Otherwise, who would be the "I" in "I Don't Do Undiluted Adulation"? I like you, but I have to stand with StuStanton on this one. The headline is misleading and misquotes Mossberg. The headline appears to have been designed merely to draw viewers; something I've noticed happening with greater frequency here.
Yep, I agree, that headline is wrong for what I saw in the video.
I got an Samsung Instinct...it does it all. the version of 3g on instinct is actually 4g by any other name. Furthermore Apple products are too trendy, like florescent clothes.
The reviews are out too early. The App Store hasn't launched yet. The App Store is why people will buy the iPhone. 3G can be turned off. But 3G is new in the USA and Americans don't like new technology so they'll be left behind by the rest of the world. 3G is faster that is why the data plan costs more. Other countries like Japan and England have 3G for years and they pay $30 or more for 3G. Americans need to keep up with the new technology. But the iPhone's monthly plan is still cheaper than the Blackberry. The reviewers don't know what they are talking about. They need to wait and review the Applications after the App Store opens.
With a worldwide launch, the iPhone should sell more than 10 million units this year. More carriers will be added. China will be the most important because Chinese tend to buy the newest and best cellphones and China has the most cellphone users in the world. Russia and possibly India will be major carriers to add. No analyst has projected the revenue from the App store. The App store and iPhone Applications have not been allowed to be marketed by Apple, because Apple wants it to be a surprise. The App store and iPhone applications will start to be marketed aggressively a few weeks after the 3G iPhone launch. You’ll see iPhone games on TV and in magazines. Also iPhone business and other applications on TV and periodicals. 3G isn’t wide spread in the USA and some countries with old cellular networks. But 3G is wide spread in Japan, and some Asian and European countries, that was why other countries wanted 3G. 3G is still new in the USA. The App store and Full Internet will be the reason why the iPhone will be better than other smartphones. There are 4,000 approved developers so there should be 4,000 new applications. Thousands of other developers have not been approved but might be approved later. The iPhone will have applications from 3rd party developers that will make it better than the Blackberry. The Blackberry costs more to use and operate than the iPhone, so reviewers who say the iPhone is expensive don’t know what they are talking about. TomTom is rumored to have a navigational software for turn-by-turn with the iPhone GPS. iPhone owners will have to pay about $10 for the TomTom software. The iPhone GPS is the same with all other smartphones with GPS but the iPhone offers a cheaper price.
stustanton/blueskyrocket04/Y! Finance User, et al: I honestly appreciate you holding me/us to such high standards. But I fully stand by that headline. Mossberg said "most journalists are not in the business of undiluted adulation." From both the verbiage and context of his comments the headline is not only fair, but an accurate representation of his meaning. It if wasn't, I can assure you Mossberg would have let me know and we would have changed/corrected it. And, yes, headlines are designed to entice viewers/readers - that is as old as journalism itself. Thanks for tuning in/caring so much. - Aaron Task
It's very interesting that I have not yet to see "Mossberg" give reviews to other cell phones beside the iPhone. Is he a friend of steve jobs? Anyways, I like the iPhone, it's one of the best phones out there to date. Samsung just released the omnia currently available in Asia, windows mobile 6.1, looks pretty nice... it might able to seriously compete with the iPhone. Discuss more abou tthe 3G iphone at http://www.3G-iPhones.org
Peter C - That's incorrect. Mossberg recently reviewed the Samsung Instinct and has done plenty of other phone reviews. HIs associate Katherine Boehret did a review of the MOT ROKR E-8 today: http://solution.allthingsd.com/
Alan, This was a well done interview and very balanced. I know that there are apple fanatics out there that get hung up on every little negative. But I think that we have a forest through the trees problem where Mossberg says that the product is great and state of the art, and while the Iphone suffers from issues such as short battery life, so do all other 3G iphones. I am an apple share holder and read his review and was pleased. It was the "review of the review" that bothered me with titles like "Iphone stinks" . Thanks for interviewing him and letting Mossberg explain each of his points.

As I understand 3G can be turned off? Does this then mean you could surf using 2.5G generally, and get better battery / talk life overall - similar to iPhone 1.0? Cheers?
